Shakespeare

I will go for the bonus points because I don't admit I hate Shakespeare often because I don't want to seem like an idiot.

I understand his themes are universal and has inspired a lot of great modern stories, but reading Shakespeare himself just bores me to tears.

Although you could say that Shakespeare is overrated, and unenjoyable if you're not a fan of literature, etc, I don't think it's a stretch that his plays are referred to as masterpieces!

Well the qualifier to this was just that you think someone is overrated, and I do think Shakespeare often gets too much credit for "inventing" themes that had been around long before he started writing.

Have you ever seen it performed live? I struggled reading it, but there's a local Shakespeare group that performs for free and it is a completely different experience. Also, I prefer the comedies.

Seconding this. These plays are meant to be experienced, and reading doesn't quite cut it.

Especially since they include the audience. Even for someone shy like me it's a lot of fun!

That's the thing about Shakespeare that drives me nuts. It's not supposed to be read. It's supposed to be watched as it is being performed live. I know, I know, teachers need to teach it as is on the page because that's how the curriculum is. But I find Shakespeare is some much more easier to understand when it is coming out of an actor's mouth.

You know what I always found funny?

I'm a double major of english and theatre. The theatre classes are totally willing to rip Shakespeare a new one when going over him in class. The english classes? Only reverence is acceptable. If you critique or admit a negative view everyone looks at you in wide-eyed shock or thinks you're dumb.

ETA: I love how the first two comments to you questioned you about your tastes because if you don't like it then something is wrong with you or how you experienced it.
