Re: "Masterpieces"... that are overrated.
The musical, though I felt pretty much the same about the book.
It's not that I don't like it, but so many people when I was a teenager and really into musicals just thought it was ~~~~so many miles better~~~~ than anything else that I just... urgh. All I could see was its flaws because people hyped it so damn much.
Also Sondheim. Again, I've got nothing against the guy, but I never found him to be ~~~miles more brilliant~~~ than everyone else. And his songs... hmm. I don't know how to describe this, and it's very likely just my weird ears, but his songs tend to get loud or high-pitched or something in ways that make them kinda hard to listen to for me. After a handful of songs it's just like... ow, stop DOING that goddamn.
(Into the Woods especially. I want to like it but everything I've heard just weirdly hurts my ears so I can't pay too close attention. Which sucks because I'm told the story is damn neat.)
