Anything by Charles Dickens. Seriously, dude was paid by the word and you could tell. I honestly don't care if the actual stories were really amazing (and I have liked some of the film adaptations), the two page long sentences.... NO. NO NO NO NO BAD WRITER NO BISCUIT.

In more modern fiction...

Palimpset by Cathrynne Valente. I got about 60 pages and had literally no idea what was going on, and there were so many fucking paragraphs that essentially existed to show off pretty prose. I wouldn't really say it was "purple" prose but it definitely got into extraneous, especially when there was absolutely no fucking explanation of who all these characters were and why they were in this place and then the whole story appears to be backstory jumping between the lot of them...? I just really don't get it. I loved Valente's Fairyland book but I can't seem to jive with her adult fiction.

Elizabeth Bear and Caitlin Kiernan, for similar reasons. Bear in particular seems to go for a ~look how smart I am tone and I'm sorry, but while I am definitely with not treating the reader like a total idiot, you shouldn't be hiding MAJOR PLOT POINTS in teensy little sentences that seem completely unimportant at the time. Kiernan does some amount of the same and both do not really focus overly much on the characters.

It's especially frustrating because the above three authors get pushed as OMG AMAZING WRITERS OF QUEER FICTION, HOW YOU DARE NOT LOVE IT? (IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR QUEER FANTASY ADVENTURE STORIES THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO WADE THROUGH SUPER-THICK PROSE AND FUCKING TAKE NOTES ON IN ORDER TO FOLLOW? REALLY?)

The old canard that Dickens was paid by the word is actually bullshit, and TBH, I judge people who repeat it. Hell, most of his novels were serialized in periodicals he ran himself, and even when he dealt with publishers, he had been so successful ever since Pickwick Papers that he could (and did) lay down any terms he wanted.

Which is totally sideways to the fact that page or more long sentences are fucking bad grammar, even then.
