Harry Potter

I mean, it was okay. But I thought the hype was a little too much and some of the fans treat it like nothing out there can be as good.

I liked Harry Potter, but I definitely wouldn't say that it's...I don't know, an amazingly important work of literature or anything. I think it'll be remembered since it had such an impact on pop culture but I do think that some people tend to overrate it.

i actually agree. i haven't finished the series but i read the first few books as a child. the writing quality was okay, and i really do like the story, but i never expected it to be lauded as one of the greatest works of all time. it just doesn't meet that criteria to me.

that's not to say it wasn't a great series, because it totally was, but...

I'm in the darn fandom and I can't stand it when people act like they've never found a book series that was its equal.

Ugh yes. Those fans tend to be the most obnoxious. And being in the HP fandom, it's only a matter of time when you come across one.

This! Stuff like that makes me wonder if those people have never actually read another book. . .I adore Harry Potter, but rereading it as an older person really has thrown its flaws into light for me. JKR WHY ARE YOU USING SO MANY ADVERBS. YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THAT MANY ADVERBS I UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU MEANT JUST FINE WITHOUT THEM.

Haha, yes! I'm crazy passionate about the characters, but I have a small stack of post its that are nothing but complaints about the editing in Deathly Hallows. DEATH WAS WITH THEM LIKE A PRESENCE.

And I can't help but wonder if the Fandom Hippogriff Wars were started by JKR literally telling us that Draco was okay in Harry's voice, and never showing us. >>

DEATH WAS WITH THEM LIKE SOMETHING THAT WAS WITH THEM.

I have to say that I still think that sentence is pretty even if it is meaningless.

Confused about the second bit. What are the fandom hippogriff wars? Fanlore is turning up nothing.

Omg, do you have fun ancient wank to read up on! Basically, there was camp number one, "Draco Is A Drama Queen Who Is Mean To Hippogriffs And He Had It Coming" versus camp number two "Hagrid Is A Terrible Teacher Who Should Have Had Less Dangerous Animals On Day One And Explained More Clearly What Not To Do". Since this was wayyy, wayyy back when, the best I can do is link you to a later poll on the subject that had plenty of fighting (and you will notice other epic fandom squabbles such as Was Marietta Horribly Scarred For Life By Hermione) at http://prettyveela.livejournal.com/101601.html#cutid1

Or when people feel bad for liking something else as much or more than HP. Huh, the ONLY reason I picked up Cirque Du Freak was because JKR endorsed it on the cover and I found like it a lot more than HP, which I still like a great deal.

That's why I picked up Cirque Du Freak when I was young too :D

Yeah- I mean, I have things I am Sentimental about from childhood, but for cripes sakes, I grew up, my tastes can change. Lord knows my opinions on HP changed as I got older.

Same. I like the series, yes it's a good series, yes it's my childhood and so on, but really? I acknowledge at least part of the reason I like it so much is because I've been reading it since I was young. I know there are better-written books out there, and there are definitely books I enjoy more.

Re: "Masterpieces"... that are overrated.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
do they have to? You can read thousands of books and still find one that means more to you than anything else, and everyone could think it mediocre or blah or whatnot. the fact that HP has had some profound effect on a lot of people doesn't mean it's a masterpiece, but just because others don't find it amazing doesn't mean everyone has to agree.

Rereading it I know that Harry Potter has major flaws, but Harry Potter was such a huge part of me as a kid that I can't help but look back on it with extreme fondness, and I know a lot of other people feel the same way. It wasn't just the story that grasped people, it was the long waits for the story and the speculation and the characters. Harry Potter for a lot of people was more of an experience than a book series, the actual reading of the book was just a small part of it. I don't think that it will ever quite reach the height of popularity it had again, because the story itself was only part of why it was huge.

I agree. I mean, I read the books and they were really good stories. But in and of themselves, they weren't... "OMG THESE ARE THE BEST BOOKS EVER AND NOTHING WILL EVER BE AS GOOD" to me. They were funny, witty, interesting (seriously, there's just a lot that is "cool" in the series -- I love Hogwarts and the spell names and all the little details of the setting probably more than the story), and told an entertaining story, but they weren't something that really affected me deeply. I mean, obviously that's really individual, but the hype at the time was that everyone should find it super amazing and I just didn't feel that way about it.
