Re: "Masterpieces"... that are overrated.

The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, Moby Dick, and Black Beauty. I read all those books in the fourth grade and hated them.

But my all time book favorite of "Why do people like this?" is: The Great Gadsby

Movies? 300, The Corpse Bride, Alice in Wonderland. I thought the last two were nice and okay but not genius or anything.

Shows? Lost and Survivor (When it first came out).

I loved the first season of survivor! And so did everyone else in that ward of the mental hospital. No joke, and it was both the patients and the staff who were hooked.

It seems like everyone loved it at the time. I remember the adults on my street having a "Survivor Party" and watching it.

Maybe it was because I was young but I really just wasn't into it.

I kind of love The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and Black Beauty, but I'd never consider them masterpieces. The Invisible Man especially is just so silly at times.

My fourth grade teacher touted them at the time as the pinnacle of literature. Maybe I just didn't like them because I was so young. I haven't tried them since but I have such a strong negative reaction with them now because of it I don't know if I want to.

If I recall correctly, I read them because the after school care place I went to at the time had them in cheap paper back version and there wasn't much else to do. So my impression was just that they were cheap pulpy fun books (that happened to have been written a long time ago), which helped me enjoy them a lot more.

Does anyone hail 300, Corpse Bride, or Alice in Wonderland (I assume you're talking about the Burton version?) as masterpieces? I enjoyed 300 and Corpse Bride but they certainly weren't anything to write home about. As for Burton!Alice... eh... let's not.

Maybe it's the people I know?

I'm not allowed to say anything bad about them. Ever. The only people who I've seen admit that they're any way subpar have been on the internet. The first few times I tried to speak up about my opinions on the movies I was told that I, "just didn't get" them or "don't understand" what makes them great. Every time I tried the response was that there was something wrong with me rather than the movie.

But... 300? A comicbook movie about nothing more than guts, glory, and a lot of CGI abs? It's not a complex epic of a story. This ain't no Illiad we're talking about here.

Especially 300. It's the worst offender for me. I actually had a whole circular conversation with someone where I stated I didn't like it and they kept going on about me, "not getting it" because it was awesome and I wasn't supposed to think. When I said it wasn't that, they couldn't comprehend why I could not care for the movie even when I backed off and just said it wasn't my thing. Can't I appreciate the awesome? Look at the awesome. It's awesome.

To get them to shut up I had to lie and repeat back at them what they told me about why I didn't like it. Which they kinda made sound like it was my fault. I had to say that it was because I didn't see it in theaters and I had all the good parts "spoiled" for me even though that's never been a problem for me before.

Because of them? I now hate the movie with a fiery passion.

300 is a racist, fascist piece of dreck, and personally speaking I already side-eye everyone who is able to overlook that because of the eye-candy. I'd love to see the argumtens for its alleged artistic value.

Ah, but it wasn't that it was "artistic"; it was that it was "awesome".

The person wasn't very... good on explaining why.
