not sure, but i'm sadly leaning towards self-righteous jew who thinks they have the ~one true judaism~

sadly the likelihood is higher that it's someone who thinks they know everything about Judaism because they took religious studies 101 in school or something.

Genuine. The "what subparts of my religious group are valid and which are unacceptable offshoots and deviations" argument is as old as religion itself.

Sadly, so true. And so pervasive. A friend of mine from work - Jewish on her mother's side, and not observant at all, made the comment about how "yeah, but he's not really Jewish, he's a convert" - when I was talking about a friend of mine, who is Hispanic and found out that his family had been forced to convert to Catholicism, and he found the whole history interesting, and it inspired him to convert back to Judaism, and now he travels around and works with other Latin American communities that are exploring their Jewish heritage.

It's sad on two fronts: One, that under all branches there's not supposed to be a division of converts versus real Jews, once you have converted, everyone is equal. But then second, just that a huge part of his time is spent giving talks that amount to "No really, there are Jews of color in the world. There are very large Jewish communities in Africa that have been there for more than two thousand years. Jews are not just white people of Eastern European heritage."
