You know what, there are more liberal congregations that *do* consider you a jaw even if it's on the father's side.
Regardless, you could convert.Jewish culture and ritual could have been part of your everyday environment at home - so you might well consider yourself culturally Jewish.

I know it's not tradition, but not everyone sticks to it as closely.

(Also - a relative of mine was "only" Jewish on his dad's side, but that didn't stop the Nazi's from putting him in a concentration camp - so there's that).

Thanks for that. You know the really annoying thing about the attitude as well is that it didn't even use to be the case, people were Jewish if their father was, then it was changed due to women being raped in war etc, it was easier to work out if it went down the mother's side.

I would be Jewish on my father's side and yeah, a friend did mention to me once that I would have been in the camps, it was enough to be considered Jewish by the Nazis, but not enough for the faith, meh.

YES. This. Liberal congregations can say whatever they want, he's not Jewish. If he became more religious he would have to convert. I have friends who did that - their mother wasn't Jewish, they became Orthodox, they converted to Judaism.

Whatever your religious beliefs, being "jewish" in america is often times an ethnic/cultural/family thing and not a strictly religious practice; I assume most shows and writers are just aiming in terms of this.

Yeah, if the show spends time to talk about a person who's dad is jewish and mom in non-jewsih/gentile and are completely oblivious to that reality and that tension, sure that's weird. But if it's like a passing mention "oh, I'm jewish/half-jewish" like... I feel like a lot of people do say that and do feel a part of the community in a cultural or familial respect, and maybe religious depending on their activity in the community.

You know what, besides the fact that the OC is an incredibly dumb show fto use as an example for the portrayal of, oh, anything, is there any reason to assume that the show creators were aware that Cohen is anything more than an established, recognizably Jewish surname? I'd even say it's feasible that the surname changed sometime in the past and the family are not cohens at all.

While you may be technically right on what makes an Orthodox Jew, not everyone is Orthodox or wants to be. Sometimes, it's better to just let people call themselves what they call themselves and not get pissy when you see them eating bacon-wrapped scallops. Up until the point where they are physically or emotionally hurting you or others, let them worry about how they practice their religion.

Oh hey, this is actually relevant to me.

Honestly, I hate 90% of portrayals of Jews in the media. They usually only ever show somebody who has only one Jewish parent, and other than that, aren't Jewish in any significant way.

And I wish somebody would bother portraying some characters who are having adventures and shit and just happen to be Orthodox. I have adventures and shit. It's amazing.

I've now decided that I actually do, in fact, hate Judaism.

You're a bunch of fucking dicks, tearing each other apart over who's the most Jew of you. All in the name of something that most likely isn't even real.

It's true: religion is a mental illness, or at least a license to engage in bias and cognitive illusion. You can pretend to your heart's content that being born to a Jewish mother and not eating pork due to obsolete health concerns makes you "better" than other people, but all it makes you is more delusional.
