Is it possible to be an elitist in a religion?

Oh, right, no I think it is. I think... ultra conservative asshole? Am I getting that right? I think I am.

Yeah, that's right.

There are definitely elitists in religion.

I grew up in an evangelical church which not only preached that its sect was the one true faith, all the children were taught how to convert other Christians. Especially those heathen Catholics. (That kind of upbringing explains why I no longer belong to any church.)

Oh yes. Different denominations almost always look down on one another. Look at the Irish Catholics and the Irish Protestants, or the conflicts between Sunni Islam and Shia Islam.

Among Russian Orthodox people in the US, there's ROCOR, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, who can't say "western" without a sneer.

Ah, I didn't know about that one. Religious conflicts bother me.... the focusing too much on differences and negativity, rather than embracing the similarities.

Orthodox Christians, like Orthodox Jews, are concerned with preserving their religion in what they regard as its pure state, so any deviation from that is automatically seen as negative.
