Thing is, Judaism is all about tradition. And more than that, it's law. Reform and left of that have decided that they don't need the law anymore- doesn't mean that the law isn't still binding. Patrilineal descent was the big break between liberal movements. I'm a convert, and while I won't tell anyone they're not Jewish, I definitely look differently at those who claim their status as Jews through their father.

Also, I hear that 'Jewish enough for Hitler' thing a lot, but Hitler was a genocidal maniac I'm not going to take his definition of anything having to do with us.

Wow. That's pretty disgusting, actually.

It's a pretty good compromise when the alternative could be 'fuck you, you're not Jewish', actually.

A lot of things are about tradition, until tradition changes. I'm nt saying you should, I'm just saying that as time progresses other views on old traditions, and new traditions altogether, do occur.o

I know, that's why I converted through the Masorti/Conservative movement. I'm all for adapting and chucking out stuff that doesn't work, but I think there's a fine line between change because it's good, needed, and what is intended, and change for change's sake. I just don't think patrilineal descent is one of those changes that's needed. It seems clear that the purpose is to bolster numbers and encourage people to become involved in shul. Which is good, but Judaism isn't about having asses in seats. My 2¢.
