I feel uncomfortable when fandom bashes a female character who's getting in the way of their slashy OTP.

IDK, I just don't get it - you can have your delicious manlove without having to attack other characters.

This this this this this. I don't understand why people feel the need to bash any character they see as "threatening" to their ships (slash or otherwise).

I don't get this either--especially when said female character isn't in a canon relationship with either half, but is just a close friend/potential love interest/common het ship/character who exists.

Me too. I loved Bela and first Meg and first Ruby on SPN, but talking about them never ends well for some reason, so I'm their fan in silence.

Be silent no longer!!!!! Some of us are out here fangirling on the late, lamented ladies of SPN. :)

I recently saw someone in my fandom calling Character A a bitch, because she 'got in the way' of B and C's love. I guess they conveniently forgot the time when B went on a rampage, murdered A because he felt rejected by her, and tried to kill C as well. Yet somehow the girl is the one being insulted, of course.

I hate when female characters are bashed for any reason, but shippers no matter what way they ship always seem to be the worst from what I've seen.

I hate when female characters are bashed for any reason

Even if it's actually justified?

Re: Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the meaning of bashing was that it wasn't justified? Criticism =/= bashing.

Ah, that could be. But in that case, isn't bashing any character bad?

Erm...I think that way of thinking is actually kinda sexist, to not judge a character on her personal merits, and judge her solely on her gender.

I do understand having a knee-jerk "yeeeeaahh...I'm gonna check this out myself before I believe that you're bashing this female character because she's a gigantic douchebag, rather than because she's female" reaction though.

This. I understand that female character bashing can be particularly bad in fandom, but there's nothing wrong with disliking a character based on his or her merits as a character (or simply just not liking a certain character trait).

Re: Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

...I thought there was a difference between bashing, and just disliking a character. Apparently I was wrong.

Re: Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I thought so too...like bashing would be "omg she's such a slut!!", disliking would be like..."I find them problematic/they just rub me wrong"

Ah, forgive me if I misunderstood! It's just that you specified bashing of female characters. If you don't like any character bashing period, that's different from being fine with bashing male characters but not fine with bashing female characters.

(Personally, I hate character-bashing of all kinds — even when I think it'd be fun to bash a really crappy/easy-to-make-fun-of character, I wind up feeling guilty. ;))

What if a show I like has a slash-y couple, and the most prominent female character in the fandom is a character I just don't like? See, then it comes off like I dislike her because of slash reasons when I just think she's bland, or an awful person, or whatever...

No matter what your reasons for disliking a female character, someone will call you a misogynist. I find this so irritating - it is OKAY to dislike female characters! Sometimes they remind you of someone you dislike in RL, sometimes they do terrible things... w/e, it's not always rational.

Re: Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-08-30 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
If you have legitimate reasons (besides the fact that she has a vagina) to hate her, then hating her is fine. It's only misogynist if you hate a woman for existing because she is a woman.

Are you talking about Irene? I don't hate her (I like her, even), but I think Irene hate is legitimate if you do. She's a pretty terrible person.

Are you talking about Irene?

Yes, that would be the woman I'm talking about.

She's a pretty terrible person.

Worse, she a terrible person that, both in the narrative and based on things Moffat has said, we're supposed to sympathize with... for some reason. Uh... no. I mean, at least with Jim, we're suppose to think he's a right evil bastard.

Oh, and for the record, I liked Sarah, and I was bummed when she disappeared in season 2.

Re: Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
But people will bash the other woman even though it's not a slash couple.

Look at those love triangle wanks. I'm always confused why people ignore this :\

Lol it's ok to bash females if you ship het!!1!

It's not surprising, given that our culture encourages this. Notice how "home-wrecker" refers, not to a man who's cheating on his wife, but to the woman he's cheating with. Cuz clearly it's all HER fault, right?

Not to start an argument, but I thought "home-wrecker" was a gender-neutral term and that it had that name not because it's considered worse, but because we already had words like "cheater" to refer to the one who cheats? Is it considered an offensive term?

Definitely. Most of the time I quite like that female regardless of whether I ship it, and often I'm into the OT3. Can't we all just get along?!
