Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2012-08-29 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
whether because you're just sick of reading the pointless bashing, or because you can't help but go, hey, I have a lot of those negative traits, and people seem to stand me all right.

For me, the number one bashed character that I adore is Sarah from Labyrinth. She's a teenager with no friends, leave her aloooooneeeeee

I feel uncomfortable when fandom bashes a female character who's getting in the way of their slashy OTP.

IDK, I just don't get it - you can have your delicious manlove without having to attack other characters.

+1

I was never able to tolerate any bashing of Jim Ellison from The Sentinel. And I do mean any bashing even for times when he actually as being a bit of a jerk. And yes it was partially because I understood his need for privacy and his fears about what would happen if others new about his senses and not wanting to be considered a freak.

BBC Mary Morstan, and she doesn't even officially exist yet.

Shinji Ikari. :( I can understand why people find him annoying, but it's made SO CLEAR that the poor kid has some serious mental health issues that go beyond just "Daddy doesn't love me enough" (as I've heard someone rant about). You'd think that the fact Anno was famously clinically depressed when he made NGE would make it clear that Shinji's the same, but people still say he's "weak" and "useless" and augh, it bothers me.

Brenda Walsh. Although it's not so much fandom (lol, is there even an active fandom for the original 90210?) as it is the world at large. She's the only realistic teenager in the cast, and yes, that does mean she can be dramatic and bitchy and what-have-you *at times*, but I don't get why no one ever seems to remember her good qualities too.

Micaiah from Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn. A large chunk of the fandom calls her a Mary Sue (when fandom favourite Soren is at least as special), claims she spotlight hogs from Ike (which, I love Ike, but no; Radiant Dawn was her game and Ike stole it from her), and say she's a terrible person for some things she does (when fandom favourite Soren has done as bad or worse).

Really bugs me, because not only is she one of few female main characters in the series, but she's the first magic-using main character and she's pretty interesting, too.

EDIT: Actually, I forgot one. Makoto Naegi from Dangan Ronpa just seems to get knocked on a little--mostly in the thread itself but I've seen other people declare him dull or something. And I just go huh, what, are we reading the same Let's Play? He's my favourite character.

does eridan count? not everybody hates him but a lot of his fans come off as ridic. most other people either don't care about him or hate him because of the whole "tried to kill a bunch of trolls" thing.

eta: i'm also REALLY (like wow levels of really) protective of wheatley, but most of the portal fandom loves him, so...

Kikyo from Inuyasha. I first started liking her because I felt bad that she was so hated, then I genuinely started loving her as a character. But gosh, twice in a bookstore her name was merely mentioned in a conversation and people automatically replied with "that bitch". Ha ha, I think those were some of the few times I argued with complete strangers.

Even though I never even finished the second season, I hate hearing people bitch about Betty. I understood where she was coming from, in a way that I don't even think the writers did. I just wanted her to dump Don to the curve and be awesome.

When I still watched White Collar, I was so ridiculously protective and fond of Sara Ellis it was just sad. I just couldn't understand the deep-seated hatred fandom seemed to have of her, especially since Elizabeth, the other potential "obstacle" to a major slash ship, was treated so well. I thought she and Neal were adorable together, frankly.

Suzaku Kururugi.

He was trying to make the world a better place damn it, and willing to put his ideals above all other considerations.

There's something admirable in that.

Orihime Inoue

I can relate to quite a bit of her traits as well as coming from abusive parents. I don't go after the groups of fans that generate hate towards her. It's not worth it and it won't accomplish anything. But I can't help and think to myself sometimes, "Is that how people see me too?"

Navi. Shut up haters Link clearly adores her and she tries so hard to help and all her annoying traits are in-game mechanics and there aren't any doors in Kokiri Forest ;_;

Like, I actually feel a brief pang of disappointment and sadness when I see art of Link trying to hurt or kill her. That's so whoppingly out-of-character I just can't...

Also, some of the Zeldas, but especially Ocarina, Spirit Tracks, and Skyward Sword. Especially Ocarina, since I'm a Link/Sheik fan and consider Sheik and Zelda to be different charcters, and yet there's so many other Link/Sheik fans who use it as an excuse to bash the hell out of her. "Ninjas are so much more manly and cool than stupid dumb princesses!" "Sheik has to be a seperate character, because Zelda's a stupid manipulative slut!" Please, just... stop. Stop, okay?

Scheris Adjani from S-cry-ed. She's my favorite character, and she gets treated horribly by fandom, mostly by Ryuhou/Mimori shippers.

Diz/Ansem the wise in Kingdom Hearts. He's been one of my favorites since CoM. I really hate how he gets treated while Org. 13 gets leather pantsed to hell and back. I also adore Namine, Kairi, and Xion. Namine is my favorite KH character, and I like Kairi, and Xion quite a bit more than I do several male characters.

Adam Milligan in Supernatural. Half the fandom hated his brief appearance on the show because it had the potential to ruin Sam and Dean's epic bromance, which, no, it wouldn't have - as evidenced by Dean picking Sam, not Adam, when Death asked.

Tea/Anzu from Yu-Gi-Oh!. I used to be neutral about her, much like with Tristan and Joey, but damn the fandom hate was ridiculous. And all that just because she was interested in the pharaoh?

Re: Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

All the female characters from Harry Potter. They are held to such high expectations. And if they don't meet fandom's requirements for how to behave, they're criticized to all hell.

It's okay for Severus Snape or Draco Malfoy to feel angst over the harder parts in their school life, but Myrtle is a crybaby and Marietta Edgecombe is a spiteful bitch. It's perfectly fine for the Mauraders to have a bit of fun, but Ginny Weasley is an evil harpy. Harry can feel depressed all he likes but Cho Chang is a human hosepipe.

It's fine to like male characters in HP, but I'm sick of the double standards and being called an apologist for seeing some of the female characters as likable or sympathetic.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Basically every single female character from WoT besides Elayne, and maybe Cadsuane.

Especially Nynaeve. Nynaeve gets way too much hate, considering that she's probably the awesomest character in the series.

I can't list them, because the surest way to make me start loving a character is for fandom to bash them. Almost every time a character gets hated on, I start liking them and my liking increases with bashing. Not because I want to like stuff other people don't like (tbh, fandom darlings are my favorite characters 75% of the time when they're non-villainous), but because whenever people bash them, all I can see is the good traits that the bashers ignore and the more the characters get bashed, the more glaring the good traits seem.

Bela Talbot from Supernatural. She was so fierce and I miss her like hell. :(

Towards the end of the second season of Teen Wolf, I saw a lot of hate on Allison and Scott. I never felt too strongly about them before that, but after seeing all the hate towards them made me get really protective of them and now I adore them. Funny how that can happen.

Also, Alex Hunter from White Collar. That one is fresh in my mind because just a few hours ago I saw the same person tag their hate about her. Twice.

Oh, and Blaine Anderson from Glee. He's one of the most popular characters in the fandom, but a good chunk of the fandom hates him and I get on edge when I see people hating on him because I share quite a few of his faults/flaws and there are certain points when I really relate to him.

BBC Sherlock's Sally Donovan. I just adore her, and the way she doesn't take any of Sherlock's shit. >_>;

I probably would have punched him if he spoke like that that me ngl. Granted, I'd get in trouble, but it would be so worth it!

Also, Raoul from Phantom of the Opera. He's really not that bad! (In the versions I've seen, at least!)

All the ladies from Transformers. There's a lot of uncomfortable shit in fandom about all the ladies (human or not) at times.

Also Skyfire I guess. I read a lot of M/SS and sometimes man.

And back in the day, Misa-Misa and Takada.

I'm pretty tired of people who say they don't like Superman because he's too powerful, so CLEARLY any story involving him must be devoid of conflict or interest. :/

Also, Korra. I can understand disliking her choices but the level of vitriol some people throw at her is waaaaaay out of proportion considering what actually happened. (She handled a crush badly and apparently didn't suffer enough to attain Avatar state? HATEHATEHATEHATE.)
