Re: Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

All the female characters from Harry Potter. They are held to such high expectations. And if they don't meet fandom's requirements for how to behave, they're criticized to all hell.

It's okay for Severus Snape or Draco Malfoy to feel angst over the harder parts in their school life, but Myrtle is a crybaby and Marietta Edgecombe is a spiteful bitch. It's perfectly fine for the Mauraders to have a bit of fun, but Ginny Weasley is an evil harpy. Harry can feel depressed all he likes but Cho Chang is a human hosepipe.

It's fine to like male characters in HP, but I'm sick of the double standards and being called an apologist for seeing some of the female characters as likable or sympathetic.

Yeah, the Cho and Ginny hate in particular is ridiculous. And don't get me started on 'omg Tonks has emotions, she's changed as a character!!'

Marietta Edgecomb IS a stupid, self-righteous little twerp (not really a spiteful bitch though, and I gotta say that while Hermione's SNEAK spell was absolutely fucking awesome in OotP when I first read it, the fact that it lasted on all the way into HBP kinda soured the humor for me) but I totally agree with all the rest of your comment. The double standards are ridiculous.

So is every teenager at that age. It doesn't mean they should be punished for the rest of their life because of it.

Well, not every teenager would go tattle on a bunch of students who anyone with two brain cells would realize were trying to do right while Umbridge was an evil bully, but yeah that permanent punishment is what I took issue with too :\
