Navi. Shut up haters Link clearly adores her and she tries so hard to help and all her annoying traits are in-game mechanics and there aren't any doors in Kokiri Forest ;_;

Like, I actually feel a brief pang of disappointment and sadness when I see art of Link trying to hurt or kill her. That's so whoppingly out-of-character I just can't...

Also, some of the Zeldas, but especially Ocarina, Spirit Tracks, and Skyward Sword. Especially Ocarina, since I'm a Link/Sheik fan and consider Sheik and Zelda to be different charcters, and yet there's so many other Link/Sheik fans who use it as an excuse to bash the hell out of her. "Ninjas are so much more manly and cool than stupid dumb princesses!" "Sheik has to be a seperate character, because Zelda's a stupid manipulative slut!" Please, just... stop. Stop, okay?

THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT BASH SPIRIT TRACKS ZELDA?!?! DDDDDD: (I literally just put down Spirit Tracks to check my e-mail) I just avoid the corners of fandom with Ocarina!Zelda bashing but the Navi hate is kind of impossible to avoid. I get why on a meta level players could get annoyed with her, but she's so far from the worst companion Link's had it's not even funny.

There are! D8 There are people who pick up on the musophobia thing and go, "STUPID GIRL IS IN A HUGE SUIT OF ARMOUR, JUST SQUASH THE DAMN RAT, WHAT A COWARD", and I want to hit them over the head with the definition of a phobia as an irrational fear. Augh!

(Ooh, how far in are you? First playthrough or picking it up again?)

Unfortunately, a lot of the Ocarina!Zelda bashing is from part of the Link/Sheik corner of fandom, and they're basically my OTP, so it's almost unavoidable :( I try to compensate by always portraying Zelda positively in fic or art, but it's honestly frustrating sometimes.

And yeah, Navi hate is everywhere. There was Navi hate on the Powerpuff Girls!

WTF. It's also obviously done as a cute thing for contrast, come on, it's Japan! Also, wow they would have hated my entire high school theater class. We took classes in the very rat-infested basement, and every time a rodent would come out 90% of the class would run to the other side of the room and the other ten percent of us had to wait for the mouse to leave. Every time I was on the point of feeling scornful, I would remind myself that I'd be up on the desk myself if it was a water bug instead of a mouse.

First playthrough! I'm in the Tower of Spirits again, getting the map for the Sand Realm.

Ah, I'm guessing the slash fandom inevitability? The exact reason I have not ventured into Link/Groose territory although the concept intrigues me.

The weirdest bit to me is how many of the Navi haters like Tatl from MM- I admittedly didn't get very far into MM before hiding under my bed, but I wanted to hurt Tatl way more than I ever did Navi.

...I would not have enjoyed that class XD;; Oh dear.

Yeah, unfortunately. I am trying to actively change that, but it's so widespread that it's kind of... hard to do so. I just try to avoid any Link/Sheik that includes Zelda-bashing. Fastest way to make me click the back button, seriously. (And aww, come and join us! Most of the Link/Groose fans I've seen still like Zelda - and I really, really like them as an OT3, too. Happily, I haven't seen much Zelda-bashing from any of the major alternate Link ships - most just consider the relationship between Link and Zelda to be one of best friends. Which is an interp I'm fine with, honestly, even if I do ship them as well. There are outliers, of course, but those are present anywhere.)

Tatl is very... well, tsundere XD;; Navi is more enthusiastic and... nurturing? I guess? Okay, that's not quite the right word, but there's more of a perception that she looks after Link, as opposed to Tatl, who's more of a foil for him to bounce off. People might resent the percieved babying.

I never would have found navi annoying if I didn't go out and hunt skulltullas and then having her constantly say "HEY LISTEN" when I'm not trying to work on the main game play. I think if nintendo hadn't made her automatically talk to you things would have gone much better because outside of that navi is actually pretty cute.

But as far as Zelda goes I do not go for any hate for her, and actually I rarely hear it. Maybe because I draw a lot of fanart of her people keep their mouth shut, but I love my girl Zelda.

True, it would have been nice to be able to toggle that on and off XD;; But that's the game mechanism problem I mentioned above - as a character, I adore her. ("There's no way he's going to hold me back again! This time, we fight together!")

Lucky you XD I've seen it around a fair amount, unfortunately, and I draw her a fair bit too.

Exactly, augh. I mean, I can understand people going, "Oh yeah, she's not my favourite character" (especially for TP!Zelda, who... doesn't do a lot), but the outright hate I've seen the Zeldas get is depressing.

Ilia too, actually. Some of the Zelink and Midlink shippes are scary towards her. Like, drawing her being graphically tortured and murdered scary.

True story- Midna fans made me not like Midna. I'm hoping when I replay TP I'll feel differently, but the way they act like Midna is THE ONNNNLYYY female character in LoZ worth shit just pisses me off.

Heh, I love Midna, personally, but I do stay away from her fandom. And woe betide you say you like Navi as a companion better!

What other female characters were there in Twilight Princess? Oh right, Illia. I liked her, I thought she was a cute combination of Saria and Malon (even though I still shipped the hell out of Link and Midna. Why didn't he follow her through the damn mirror, why?) Midna's probably one of my favorite characters from the series, but that doesn't mean I immediately dub everyone else as worthless.

Navi was the whole reason I wanted a Nintendo 64/Zelda game, haha.

XD I have vivid memories of sitting down in front of OoT with no background or explanation. Navi was invaluable for me!

OH MY GOD NAVI HATE BOTHERS ME SO MUCH. I mean...sometimes I'll laugh at some of the jokes, it's funny, yeah, but SHE WAS ACTUALLY USEFUL. Should they have had her hints come up less? Yeah, maybe, but most of the stuff she tells you is useful advice and she has a point in the plot at large. Compared to Tatl, she's amazingly helpful. (And don't get me wrong, I love Tatl too, but come on, most of her hints could be paraphrased as "SHIT, I DUNNO, I'M A TSUNDERE, GO ON GAMEFAQS OR SOMETHING")

Yeah - dude, most of the time Navi actually tells you how to beat the monster. Tatl just makes smartarse remarks. Tatl is a fun character, but I'd much rather travel with a Navi!

I never really liked Navi because she always felt so... impersonal, like a teacher. To me, she never really felt like Link's friend like Midna or Tatl.

Closet misogynists, mostly. It's really damn sad (and kind of annoying, since people go, "Oh, you think Sheik and Zelda are seperate characters? WHY DO YOU HATE ZELDA YOU WOMAN-HATER?!" and I'm flailing over trying to explain that, no, Zelda is one of my absolute favourite charaters, I just don't think they're the same person and believe they have their own skills, strengths, weaknesses, and characterisation why can't people have different opinions without getting into bashing sdfgshjk)... anyway.

The best description I've seen for Navi is 'the most frazzled fairy babysitter in the world', if that helps? She is partially teaching Link, she's basically the only one who knows anything about the outside world. Midna and Tatl were more on the same level as Link, but Navi was actively looking after him.

I really like the N64 companion fairies. Tatl is a hilarious brat, and Navi is so helpful and like a total adoptive big sister bff exposition character (and I completely buy that Link would leave Hyrule to look for her. foreverrrr)

But then again, my taste turned out to be pretty different or more tolerable of things compared to the internet (eg: I love Tingle so much).

Best description of Navi - 'the most frazzled fairy babysitter in the world'. Poor Navi. And yeah, she's basically the only constant Link has throughout the entire game, when his entire world's been turned upside down - he loses his home, the only friend he had as a kid, and then finds out he's not even the species he thought he was, so I can definitely buy him getting incredibly attached to her.

XD I can't say I like Tingle, but I do tend to like Scrappy characters. I like Ilia, too.
