I don't think it's a case of, "HA! HA! Look at this idiot foreigner" as much as a case of, "HA! HA! Look at this big, dumb, blonde jock."

Because whether it's in the comics or the movies, Thor comes across as less brains and more brawn. That's why his alter-ego is a less muscled more medium sized doctor. A very accomplished doctor. Stan Lee was trying to go for a mirror opposite of Thor. So, if you don't like it, blame the creator.

Yeah, in my experience fandom has always equated muscly, jock type characters with being dumb, even if they aren't in canon.

This, this this this. Since a lot of it, I've noticed, is written by people who also glorify or woobify Loki, it feels more like teenagers projecting nerds-vs-jocks onto the Odinson bros (and of course, glorifying the nerds while vilifying the jocks).

Oh gods, this.

That's what I usually saw as well. The bitter resentment and passive-aggressiveness among Loki-woobifiers is pretty stiflingly blatant, ngl.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Which is sad, because Thor's a bigger Loki fan than any of them will ever hope to be. (That went around on Tumblr a while back, I wish I could remember who came up with it...)

Yeah, I remember seeing that. I think the phrase was "Thor loves Loki more than you love Loki".

Thor still loves Loki after Loki's tried to personally kill him MULTIPLE TIMES!

(I watched Avengers with a friend recently; she kept going "and this is the point where he's totally burned through Thor's love" and I am like "no. Sorry. That actually won't happen.")

And now I want to go look through all the Overly-Accepting!Thor memes I collected :) Seriously, out of all the Avengers he's probably the guy that I want to hug the most.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
After going to see Avengers for the second time I just wanted to reach through the screen and give him a huge hug and tell him that I'm sorry his brother's such a little shit. I love Loki but my god my Thor feelings go through during their scenes.

tbh this is also something that bugs me about his characterization in fics — I'd think he'd be utterly miserable and broken after the events of The Avengers, but he's always portrayed as totally happy and carefree right off the bat. I love happy carefree Thor, but...I just can't see him being like that without a good chunk of time to mentally recuperate.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, now I'm just picturing Thor as an apologist woobie!Loki fangirl. I can see it.

He TOTALLY would be! There needs to be a crackfic somewhere where norsekink/avengerkink is an rpf meme in the MCU, and Thor is guy responsible for all the "poor misunderstood Loki" anon prompts. :D

This, so much.

IA. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if there are people writing stupid!Thor because they equate cultural confusion with a true lack of intelligence, but I've only seen dumb Thor happen in fics that also have ~misunderstood wonderful genius~ Loki. So it's a case of mischaracterizing one character to make another one look better by comparison, and not 'foreign people are inherently stupid'.
