I know what you mean. It's infuriating. The guy is kind of light-hearted, true, and is definitely going to continue to have a few faux pas, but he's not a fucking idiot.

...I've always hated the moron!Thor trope, but I never thought about it as xenophobic. But now that I think back on it, the fic writers really DO characterize him with all the infuriating leaps of logic and dehumanization that we always bash in the works of older american and british authors who committed embarrassingly ignorant race!fail and culture!fail when writing "exotic" characters and shit. Ewwwww...

I've seen him portrayed as super-easygoing to the point of accepting really out-there things, but I've never seen him portrayed as outright stupid. This makes me wonder what happens inside a person's brain to make them cross that not-okay line...

Yeah.

Yeah it is irritating, hurtful, etc. The list could go on.

But yeah, stupid!Thor is irritating and stupid.

The thing I don't get about it, other than he isn't a moron, is that he's presumably lived for so long that he's probably seen a LOT so I don't think Earth can throw anything at him that'll particularly phase him for long. Ok living as a mortal was challenging but he adapted fairly quickly in my mind.

Um, okay, no offense, but I completely zonked out and didn't read the text of this secret for a good thirty seconds because I was too busy gazing longingly at Thor's hair and arms. A+ background pic, anon :)

Anyway...on to the actual secret — WOW you reminded me of an amazing essay rant I saw on LJ a while ago that kind of touched on this, although I don't think the author ever called people who write moron!Thor xenophobic or racist or whatever. *hunts around in bookmarks* AHA got it! It's called Why Thor Is Not A Fucking Idiot by rosalui. I'm gonna just post a couple of relevant passages here:

"...yeah, we see him Majorly Not Understanding Shit and it’s fucking hilarious and I love it (...) He walks into a pet store and asks for a horse or a cat large enough to ride, walks into traffic, smashes cups on the floor, and can’t pronounce “Hubble.” (...)

And me, I think about Asgard and go, wow, I don’t actually know what that thing attached to the Bifrost was. Like, it was a giant gold spinny ball with a pointy thing and it went WHIRR and ZOOM and the Asgardians would think I was the stupidest person ever to exist ever. I mean, if I suddenly woke up there I’d walk into a shop and ask if they had a car or a bicycle, probably, and they’d be all LOL WUT NO HAVE THIS GIANT CAT ACTUALLY, WE RIDE THEM HERE. (...)

And Mjolnir? I would pronounce it exactly like Darcy, which was “myow-myow” and probably sounded like the funniest shit ever when Thor heard it because it’s Mjolnir, duh, everyone knows what Mjolnir is. (...)

If I may make a brief comparison, I was raised in New York and then went to school in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong restaurants, they serve you shitty tea with your bowls and utensils, and it’s used to wash stuff in, like chopsticks, before the meal.

When I first got there, I drank it.

And all of my friends were like UM. ER. UH. And, you know, it was really really funny and I laughed a lot, but, yeah, hi, that’s what Thor’s experiencing on Earth. WHY DO THEY LOOK AT HIM ODDLY WHEN HE ASKS FOR A NEW DRINK? HE WANTS ONE AND HE ASKED FOR IT THE WAY HE ALWAYS DOES THESE HUMANS ARE SO ODD WHY DO THEY NOT WANT HIM TO HAVE A NEW COFFEE (and so forth).

(...) Thor doesn’t understand flying monkeys? Well, Coulson doesn’t understand bilgesnipe."

This is really obnoxious. What annoys me the most is how some people utterly fail to comprehend his speech patterns. Yes, he uses so elaborate words, but in movieverse, he does not use "thee" or "thou" and I really don't know where phrases like "friend Stark" came from.

Why can't we accept a light-hearted but clever and charming hero and just write him the way he is? I personally love writing fluffy culture clash stories where Thor deals with the Midgardian conventions while retaining his intelligence.

I don't think it's a case of, "HA! HA! Look at this idiot foreigner" as much as a case of, "HA! HA! Look at this big, dumb, blonde jock."

Because whether it's in the comics or the movies, Thor comes across as less brains and more brawn. That's why his alter-ego is a less muscled more medium sized doctor. A very accomplished doctor. Stan Lee was trying to go for a mirror opposite of Thor. So, if you don't like it, blame the creator.

Every time I read a fan fic that portrays Thor as a clueless moron or as a ball of angst (I can see him brooding, but not angsting), I'm put out of the story immediately.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I would describe Thor as childlike (the guy makes me think of a big, friendly dog). I think a lot of the problem comes from people not understanding that there is a pretty big difference between someone being childlike and someone being childish. The former is usually used in relation to being idealistic, inquisitive, enthusiastic, and open-minded, while the latter is associated more with being immature, stubborn, self-centered, and not open to new ideas and experiences. In that sense, Thor is definitely childlike, but a lot of bad writers and RPers don't understand the difference and write him as childish instead.

The secret's so bright, I gotta wear shades. It's Nova, baby.

You've blinded me. I'm gasping and grasping in the dark, struck inarticulate and inadequate.

It's been too long since I've witnessed something so beautifully warped. You've bound me, tied and tangled. I'm strung up in your perfectly twisted observation; the sharp sting of your words slowing burning through me and I quiver in anticipation of the explosion.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You actually make a good point, because I totally agree with the skeeviness of portraying people who don't understand our culture as stupid, but from your melodramatic phrasing, I gotta say...

People do the same thing with Steve though, and I don't think that can really be called 'xenophobic.'

The other Asgardians aren't portrayed as stupid by fandom, so I don't agree with you on it being akin to xenophobia. It's just Thor, and I think it's because people love to shoehorn him into the jock role and Loki into the smart overshadowed nerd role (omg Thor is so mean). This is a really, really common occurrence in fandom.

I agree with the people saying it's less "dumb foreigner" and more "big dumb guy"/"dumb blond" combined.

But honestly, I think Thor IS kinda childlike. It's part of his charm. Now when people confuse "childlike" with "stupid" is when I get pissed, because they're not the same thing. Children can be naive and overzealous but that's not an indicator of intelligence.
