I don't think it's merely culture shock, though. Because Loki is shown as very good at acclimating himself to the modern English language and generally gives off a very arrogant and highly intelligent air, Thor's lack of the same makes him appear less than intelligent. He also has three basic emotions: joy, fury, and beffudlement. It's very easy to make Thor into a "jock" because, well, that's essentially his personality.

I have a hard time seeing Thor as a highly intelligent person. He's not stupid...but he's no genius.
