People do the same thing with Steve though, and I don't think that can really be called 'xenophobic.'

The other Asgardians aren't portrayed as stupid by fandom, so I don't agree with you on it being akin to xenophobia. It's just Thor, and I think it's because people love to shoehorn him into the jock role and Loki into the smart overshadowed nerd role (omg Thor is so mean). This is a really, really common occurrence in fandom.

This.

And oh oh! I gotta rec a bit more of that essay I was recc'ing in my above comment:

"...Here’s what Steve probably remembers from the 1940’s: His desegregated military squad. His squad in the midst of an escape picking up Tesseract-charged weapons and being all LOL WHAT DOES THIS DO and IDK BRO TRY SHOOTING IT and OH WOW THAT WORKS I GUESS and not a single one of them standing around clutching at their pearls and crying OH MY LAWD, I DON’T RECOGNIZE THIS ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY."

Yeah! Steve takes everything in really well. He's very impressed by the carrier, but he doesn't freak over it. And who wouldn't be impressed? In the deleted scene we see him using a computer with seemingly no problem. Although he's certainly a man out of time, he's shown adapting very well, even if it mentally tears him up inside.

I love fun stuff that deals with Steve adapting to the modern world in humorous ways (and Thor too), but not when it makes him appear dumb.

This is so true, considering the same writers usually portray Thor as being just as stupid when he's in Asgard. I really don't think it's a writers being xenophobic thing at all.

Yes, exactly.

Ugh, don't get me started on how several fic writers portray Steve. It is more of the lack of research that really gets to me though. It isn't hard to find information on American history from 1918-1945 or information about movie-verse Steve Rogers. http://marvel-movies.wikia.com/wiki/Steve_Rogers

In the past two days, I've read fics where Steve had never seen a movie in color, never seen a naked woman (he went to college for art- he would have studied/drawn naked people), he didn't curse or drink, his parents were alive when he went under the ice, Steve didn't know what a television was (they were around in the 1930s), and Steve had never heard of Mickey Mouse or Walt Disney.

I wanted to kiss the author that had Steve mention what is now called Tijuana Bibles (porn comics from the 1930s-1960s, many of which featured parodies of actresses or characters like Dick Tracy and Popeye). I would love a fic that has Bucky get Steve to draw the comics and he'd sell them on the street corner to make a buck during the 1930s. Then cut to present day when Tony is going through some of his Dad's old things and finds his stash of Tijuana Bibles- most of which were ones Steve drew. Tony confronts Steve about them one moring at breakfast with the rest of the Avengers.

Steve had never seen a movie in color,

But, but, he referenced The Wizard of Oz right there in the movie...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
The Wizard of Oz was filmed in black and white and the Oz parts were colored later. Technically doesn't count.

The Wizard of Oz was released on August 25th, 1939.
There were movies and cartoons done color in the 1920s. Walt Disney's Silly Symphony cartoon, Flowers and Trees was released on July 30th, 1932 and was the first commercially released film to be produced in full-color three-strip Technicolor process. There had been two-color Technicolor films for several years before that. Mickey Mouse wasn't released in color until The Band Concert (1935- My grandpa remembers going to the theater to see Mickey in color.) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released on February 4th in 1938. As someone interested in art, Steve would have gone- either with Bucky (and dates) or by himself.
Crud- that is another fic I want to read- Steve drags Bucky to go see Snow White.

I'd like to read the fic in your second paragraph too, ooh!
