I'm 23 and living at home for health reasons. Recently I had to stop going to school because I was so (mentally) ill. My parents have been an amazing source of support, and I've gotten into doing as much as the housework as I can to help out. (There's also the implied "when we get old you're so gonna be the one taking care of us". <3)

The reason I asked about this is that recently, I've caught people talking to my Mom telling her that she and my Dad are coddling me and how I have to be forced to be independent. They act like this advice will solve all my problems. My mother has been brushing it off but she says getting stupid advice like this is reminding her of when I was little and people said to let me stay at home when I wanted to, and supposedly I would eventually want to go back to school myself. She ended up having to homeschool me until college. (Just to confirm, she asked me today if I wanted to go back to school yet. 15 years and it's still a "no" on that one.)

So yeah, I wanted to see what the real general attitude was about adults living at home. It made me feel a lot better. I hate that the social norm for the past couple of decades has been "at 18 get the hell out of your parents house or you're an infant" and people are sticking to it when times have changed and people's reasons have always been diverse.
