Well, the book was written by a 16-year-old girl. If she was anything like me at that age, I doubt the subtext was entirely unintentional. :P

Some of people's assessments of the book indicate that she was writing the kind of boys she would want to know/fall in love with. People say Ponyboy was too sensitive for a 14 year old boy. I don't know if I agree with that, but it's been a while since I've read the book.
