Most people who like the idea don't like it because they think Loki would never do anything as vile as what he did in Avengers, it's that they think Loki would have done equally evil things but with style. Loki being the posterboy for "freedom from freedom" just doesn't really fit, you know? It isn't that he wouldn't go around slaughtering people who annoyed him and think nothing of it.

How about "he was just trying to show off how scary he was by lording it over them?"
How about "the Chitauri wouldn't go along with him unless he did xyz"?
How about "he was dicking around with humans for shits and giggles because he thinks they're ants?"
How about "he wanted to lure some heroes there in order to fight them"?
How about "he wanted to do the exact opposite of what Thor and Odin would do"?
How about "he had a bigger plan that got interrupted when Cap and Iron Man crashed the party"?
How about 84758459485498 alternative explanations that don't involve retconning a big chunk of the movie?
Man, come on. Why pick the dullest, least character-driven explanation possible?
