My parents inherited (looong story, and sad, so I won't go into it here) a loving but rather dumb cocker spaniel. Tawny quickly came to adore my mother above all others, but he was a cheerful dog who was friendly to all of us all of the time. He was never particularly aggressive to anyone or anything. Anyway, one Christmas, we were celebrating the holiday and my Dad's birthday (which is on Christmas, much woe to him as a small child, etc.) My Mom had bought him a gift bag with a photograph of a bulldog in a party on it. We were sitting around the tree when suddenly, a low, slow growl erupted from behind all of us. Tawny was stalking towards our little group, inch by inch, fiercely intent on something that we couldn't see. Everyone freaked out for a moment (as I said, he never, ever got worked up or growled at much of anything) until my sister pointed at a party hat bulldog picture and said, "It made eye contact with him!" And then everyone cracked up. My Mom laughed so hard she cried. And Tawny, poor dog, looked completely bewildered. My sister picked up the gift bag and shook it up and down. Tawny stopped growling, went into another room, and sulked for the rest of the day. Later on, I came in to find my Dad lying on the floor next to him, saying, "poor boy, poooooor booooyyyyyy" in a sympathetic voice.

We all loved that dog. Heart of gold, brain of oatmeal, and everything. I was so sad when we finally had to put him down, but he lived a good life with lots of leftover bits of meatloaf and walks (and the occasional, photographic hiccup.)
