Happy pet stories?

[personal profile] cakemage 2012-09-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
My pet ferret, Charlie, passed away last night. He was ancient and hadn't been doing well lately, so it didn't come as a surprise, but I'm still feeling pretty depressed about it. I want to focus on the happy memories I have of him, though, so I thought I'd start a thread to talk about the good times we've had with our pets.

Charlie loved anything shiny. He'd try to carry off my cats' tinsel wands, go after laser pointers with as much vigor as the rest of the animals, and would just go wild over plastic bags and anything else that made crinkly noises. He also knew the sound of a treat-bag being opened, and when he heard it he'd stop whatever he was doing and scamper over to beg treats off of whoever had the bag. And back when my other ferrets were alive, they'd all gang up on my dachshund, Sokka, and pester him relentlessly while he just sat there and took it, waiting for me to rescue him. It was pitiful, but also kind of hilarious. Also, Charlie would make the cutest little ferret "dook-dook" noises when he ran.

So, what are your cute pet stories, f!s?

I don't have any pets so here is my favorite ferret story.

I'm really sorry for your loss. My much-loved dog Candy passed away this spring, so here's the story my family still laughs about when we remember her:

A couple of times a year we'd take her to a wooded park built around a small dam out in the countryside, very popular with walkers and other dogs who were all off-leash. You'd walk around one side of the water, then you'd cross a very low bridge to get to the other side. This bridge was only a few inches higher than the surface of the water, with no walls or handrails on the sides. Since most people/dogs aren't idiots, this worked quite well.

Unfortunately, Candy was the Idiot Queen.

One day we were crossing on the bridge when she spotted a pair of ducks paddling a little way away. Since the water only covers the ducks' legs it can't be that deep, right? Easy enough to leap as far as she could off the bridge and chase them! Works in theory, but it turned out that she was not the messiah and instead of running across the surface she ended up diving into some 8-10 feet of water and completely panicking, splashing everywhere and whining piteously. While my parents laughed I went in after her and hauled her out by her collar, leaving her standing on the bridge bedraggled and dripping water and clearly wondering what the hell just happened.

Now with most normal dogs that would be the end of the story, but not ours. She'd been holding a stick in her mouth when she tried her impromptu diving act, and the shock of falling into the water had made her spit it out. Now the stick was floating on the surface of the water a few feet away, and we watched as she looked at it longingly (I'd let go of her collar, thinking she wouldn't be so stupid as to go in again) There was clearly some sort of thought going on in that dog's head: she'd just tried walking on the surface but that hadn't worked out so well for her, so maybe she should stay on the bridge? But the stick was floating so temptingly just out of reach...

Candy decided on a compromise. Leaving her back legs firmly planted on the bridge, she figured that she should be safe just standing on the water with her front paws, just long enough to reach out for that stick....

Who fell right back into the water, head first this time?

And who had to go back once again to haul that dog back onto dry land? I am a bona fide hero.

Learning from experience was not one of that dog's strongest points. Did I mention she weighed close to 30kg of pure muscle even when she was dry? I got a real workout that day, and from then on we'd always pause for an 'idiot break' before crossing the bridge to clip her leash back on... otherwise she'd have been right back in the water the next time we were there, I'm sure.

I'm sorry for your loss as well. That's a hilarious story, though, and it was brave of you to go in after her twice. Dealing with a panicking dog is hard enough on its own, but adding deep water to the mix? Hoo, boy.

It doesn't help to hear it from anyone else, I know, but things do gradually get better with time and in the end the happy stories are the ones that really stay with you.

It was really one of those moments where you act without thinking: she was pretty much my little sister and the only thing I remember thinking about as I went after her was annoyance at my parents for laughing, if I recall. I'm sure she'd have been fine without any help, but instinct doesn't always work that way (still, I was kind of annoyed when she went right back in the second time...)

Yeah, that's usually the case. It can be hard to strike a balance between just letting yourself grieve and letting yourself be overwhelmed by it at first, but it does get easier with time.

And I know what you mean. Logic doesn't always come into play when your loved ones are in danger or at least seem to be. But I think it's better to take action and have it turn out to have been unnecessary than to not act and find that you were wrong not to do so, you know?

My neighbor's cat is quite the hunter, often leaving dead mice, small birds, and things that I think are voles by the back door. My neighbor says that when this cat was a kitten, the first thing she ever "caught" was a candy bar wrapper that was in the grass and shivering a bit in the wind, so I guess it looked alive. Upon bringing home the wrapper, the cat was very vocal and acted SO PROUD. "Look what I caught!"

My co-worker had her dog at the office one day and it found a large rubber band on the floor. It started playing with the band by picking it up in her mouth, tossing it into the air, and repeating the process after it fell back to the ground again. The dog was standing next to a box that was slightly taller than the dog (it was a small dog) and eventually she tossed the rubber band and it landed on top of the box. It was now out of the dog's sight and to the dog it must have appeared that the band just vanished and she stood there looking around all confused and whimpering for a minute.

Gotta love the mighty hunter cats. They're providing for the family!

Heh, poor dog. It never fails to fascinate me just how much dogs and cats love rubber bands. Watching one go after a rubber band can provide near-endless amusement.

I'm sorry to hear that :( Losing pets is the worst, and I haven't lost any major pets yet, only mice.

Also, you named your dachshund Sokka? I think I just fell in love with you <3

There was this very small shallow beach along the path we used to walk my Shetland Sheepdog in our old house, and we would let her off the leash and she'd run back and forth and back and forth along the edge of the water, keeping an eye on the waves and barking as they washed onto the sand, as though she thought that her Super Speshel Sekrit Ninja Sheepherding Skillz were the only things keeping the waves from running all the way up the beach and flooding the place. :D

My dog Anna died this spring. It's awful, losing a pet.

She was one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met, and such a good girl. She loved carrots, and grapes, and pretty much anything that anyone else was eating. She'd do tricks for carrots, though--I think she like the way they crunched.

I'm still getting over the loss of one of my dogs as well. I'm so sorry. *hugs*

As for cute stories...I'm afraid I can't think of any particularly interesting ones at the moment, but Zoe sort of...hops around when excited. It's adorable and hilarious.

My parents inherited (looong story, and sad, so I won't go into it here) a loving but rather dumb cocker spaniel. Tawny quickly came to adore my mother above all others, but he was a cheerful dog who was friendly to all of us all of the time. He was never particularly aggressive to anyone or anything. Anyway, one Christmas, we were celebrating the holiday and my Dad's birthday (which is on Christmas, much woe to him as a small child, etc.) My Mom had bought him a gift bag with a photograph of a bulldog in a party on it. We were sitting around the tree when suddenly, a low, slow growl erupted from behind all of us. Tawny was stalking towards our little group, inch by inch, fiercely intent on something that we couldn't see. Everyone freaked out for a moment (as I said, he never, ever got worked up or growled at much of anything) until my sister pointed at a party hat bulldog picture and said, "It made eye contact with him!" And then everyone cracked up. My Mom laughed so hard she cried. And Tawny, poor dog, looked completely bewildered. My sister picked up the gift bag and shook it up and down. Tawny stopped growling, went into another room, and sulked for the rest of the day. Later on, I came in to find my Dad lying on the floor next to him, saying, "poor boy, poooooor booooyyyyyy" in a sympathetic voice.

We all loved that dog. Heart of gold, brain of oatmeal, and everything. I was so sad when we finally had to put him down, but he lived a good life with lots of leftover bits of meatloaf and walks (and the occasional, photographic hiccup.)

I'm sorry for your loss. Charlie sounds like he was quite the charming fellow.

My cat Vasquez shows a bit of dog-like behaviour in that she plays fetch with her favourite toy mouse. She grabs it and drops it by me, I throw it, she runs to fetch it and comes back. Lather, rinse, repeat.

My othet cat, Rousseau, wants to join me whenever I go to the bathroom. She's curious about the shower/bathtub. Also, she knows that I clean the litterbox when I'm in there, so it's kind of a "yes! I can go pee now!" situation.

My rabbit likes to run around the room in circles at top speed - jumping over everything in the way. If I'm on the floor that includes me. If i'm on the bed, it includes jumping on the foot of the bed, running up my body and launching herself off my face.

It's adorable.

Ferret wardances and dookdooks are the best. Charlie sounds like he was an awesome ferret and I'm glad he got to live to an old age with you.

Our family cat used to hide on top of doors, so that he could jump on my dad when he passed through them.
