Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally clicked the wrong thing and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (a bit over 100) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here and it will still go up this week.

The submissions post for next week is linked below as usual.

I'm really sorry for your loss. My much-loved dog Candy passed away this spring, so here's the story my family still laughs about when we remember her:

A couple of times a year we'd take her to a wooded park built around a small dam out in the countryside, very popular with walkers and other dogs who were all off-leash. You'd walk around one side of the water, then you'd cross a very low bridge to get to the other side. This bridge was only a few inches higher than the surface of the water, with no walls or handrails on the sides. Since most people/dogs aren't idiots, this worked quite well.

Unfortunately, Candy was the Idiot Queen.

One day we were crossing on the bridge when she spotted a pair of ducks paddling a little way away. Since the water only covers the ducks' legs it can't be that deep, right? Easy enough to leap as far as she could off the bridge and chase them! Works in theory, but it turned out that she was not the messiah and instead of running across the surface she ended up diving into some 8-10 feet of water and completely panicking, splashing everywhere and whining piteously. While my parents laughed I went in after her and hauled her out by her collar, leaving her standing on the bridge bedraggled and dripping water and clearly wondering what the hell just happened.

Now with most normal dogs that would be the end of the story, but not ours. She'd been holding a stick in her mouth when she tried her impromptu diving act, and the shock of falling into the water had made her spit it out. Now the stick was floating on the surface of the water a few feet away, and we watched as she looked at it longingly (I'd let go of her collar, thinking she wouldn't be so stupid as to go in again) There was clearly some sort of thought going on in that dog's head: she'd just tried walking on the surface but that hadn't worked out so well for her, so maybe she should stay on the bridge? But the stick was floating so temptingly just out of reach...

Candy decided on a compromise. Leaving her back legs firmly planted on the bridge, she figured that she should be safe just standing on the water with her front paws, just long enough to reach out for that stick....

Who fell right back into the water, head first this time?

And who had to go back once again to haul that dog back onto dry land? I am a bona fide hero.

Learning from experience was not one of that dog's strongest points. Did I mention she weighed close to 30kg of pure muscle even when she was dry? I got a real workout that day, and from then on we'd always pause for an 'idiot break' before crossing the bridge to clip her leash back on... otherwise she'd have been right back in the water the next time we were there, I'm sure.

I'm sorry for your loss as well. That's a hilarious story, though, and it was brave of you to go in after her twice. Dealing with a panicking dog is hard enough on its own, but adding deep water to the mix? Hoo, boy.

It doesn't help to hear it from anyone else, I know, but things do gradually get better with time and in the end the happy stories are the ones that really stay with you.

It was really one of those moments where you act without thinking: she was pretty much my little sister and the only thing I remember thinking about as I went after her was annoyance at my parents for laughing, if I recall. I'm sure she'd have been fine without any help, but instinct doesn't always work that way (still, I was kind of annoyed when she went right back in the second time...)

Yeah, that's usually the case. It can be hard to strike a balance between just letting yourself grieve and letting yourself be overwhelmed by it at first, but it does get easier with time.

And I know what you mean. Logic doesn't always come into play when your loved ones are in danger or at least seem to be. But I think it's better to take action and have it turn out to have been unnecessary than to not act and find that you were wrong not to do so, you know?
