I haven't read Avengers versus X-men but I have a feeling I might want to stay away from it because I've always been more of an X-men girl then an Avengers girl. I mean my favorite Avenger is even Scarlet Witch so I'm always siding with the mutants.

Anyone want to give me a summary of what's going on? I'm so behind on my comics.

Phoenix is heading back to earth. At least two planets are eaten up on account of being in the way.

Hope Summers is clearly supposed to be the next host.

Avengers are all "hey. Maybe we should take her off the planet so that when it arrives... it doesn't burn us all to cinders in the process?"

Hope is all "actually, that doesn't sound like a bad idea..."

Scott Summers is all "Oh fuck no. I'm pretty sure this is how we restore all the mutants. I'm not fucking that chance up by changing the rules"

Fighting occurs. Phoenix arrives. Shit goes wrong, and Cyclops, Emma, Collossus, Magik, and Namor each get a fifth of the phoenix force.

Cyclops is all "hello, we are in charge of the world now. You get free energy, we are going to fix pollution and all the other problems, no more starvation."

"You also lose choice. All those big wmd's? You don't have those anymore. No, I wasn't speaking metaphorically. Go check. They are gone. We are that good."

They are all "surely the world will thank us!"

Naturally, that's not what happens. Avengers are being hunted down now, and it all unravles as the Phoenix Force starts to corrupt the five. Black Panther annuls his marriage with storm after Namor floods Wakanda (YESSSSSSSSSS).

The Avengers finally beat one of the five (Namor), only to discover this makes the phoenix force leave that one and go into all the others. Collusus and his sister beat the shit out of spiderman but he convinces them they should each attack the other to take the power for themselves. They both burn out in the ensuing fight. Spiderman mostly bleeds a lot.

Meanwhile, Emma has decided she wants to be adored. As in "adore me or I'll rewrite your thoughts till you think right."

Hope has been training with Iron Fist, as it turns out one of the few Phoenix's who didn't lose it had been trained in K'un L'un to handle the energy (the dragon that gives the iron fist it's power is said to have beaten the poneix once)

This is working well, it seems while the Phoenix Empowered can shrug off attacks that normally would take them down, Hope Jonsing on Chaos magic and the strength of the undying can fuck their shit.

Predictably, after being beaten by hope Cyclops has decided he needs all the Phoenix power, so Cyclops Emma throwdown is imminent for all of the Phoenix pie.

So basically the X-Men were right, the Phoenix wasn't going to destroy the planet, and the Avengers only made things worse when they attacked it instead of just letting it go to Hope.

Unclear. The phoenix was apparently pissed about the no more mutants thing. And it was weakened considerably by something Iron man built before it actually got there.

Though it didn't attempt to destroy earth once it got there, no. Just two other planets full of life on the way (the phoenix force is kinda a bastard)

I like to call this event "everybody overreacts" From the Phoenix on down.

intrigueing: (hulk saves iron man)

This event? "Everybody overreacts" is like the anthem of the Marvel universe.

Also, you rock at summaries, jsyk. And if I assume you're right, I wasn't misinformed, so suck it, anon in the thread above.

It is, but this one extra so.

I disagree with some of your points, but it doesn't sound as if you got the facts wrong, no. Anon can indeed suck it on that ponit.

Oh don't mind me, I'm a very bitter and reactionary person, especially when it comes to painful ex-fandoms.

If I may ask, what soured you?

It was pretty much a build up of everything to a critical mass of fuck-this-shit. See, I never followed current comics month-to-month for extended periods of time. I read mostly just Spider-Man as a kid. So when I started reading comics really hardcore in earnest, I jumped into all Marvel comics, from all periods, all the time, picking and choosing whatever sounded interesting and branching out. So I was reading Dark Age and Silver Age and very recent stuff at the same time. And basically, I realized that no matter how hard I looked, pretty much every single thing about Marvel comics from recent years -- I'll tentatively date it to somewhere around Avengers Disassembled, but it was a lot more gradual than a precise turning point -- made me want to punch all the characters in the face and I could not muster up the willpower to give a flying fuck about what happened to any of them, and that was such a massive, jarring difference from how glorious and how emotionally resonant the comics I was reading from earlier times were that it was pretty much impossible for me to reconcile the whole timeline together without feeling disgusted.

I'll give you an example: if you've read Avengers Forever, remember when the Avengers teams from all the alternate timelines in which the Avengers turned bad and got corrupted and ceased to be heroes came out into that limbo-place to attack the 616 Avengers? And then all the Avengers teams from all the alternate timelines where the Avengers remained good and heroic came out to join the 616 Avengers and fought off the bad Avengers? And it was just EPIC? Well, the 616 Marvel Universe is one of those universes in which the Avengers went bad, except it's the entire Marvel universe, not just the Avengers. The idea of painting the current 616 superheroes as heroic individuals or people you should ever like or admire in the slightest is preposterous. To me at least. Maybe other people don't see it that way, maybe they are still interested in the characters and stories, but I just can't care about them anymore. At all.

Regardless of what happened to the other planets, I don't think Earth was ever in danger; the Phoenix was just heading towards Hope. If the Avengers had left it alone it would have bonded with her, but because of them it bonded with the five X-Men, who unlike Hope had never prepared for being its host, instead.

Cap, goaded on by Wolverine who was pissed at Cyclops, also handled things horribly in the beginning when he demanded that Cyclops just give them Hope. While the X-Men have made mistakes in this event, I place more of the blame on the Avengers because they started the whole mess.

But they aren't entirely comprised of filthy mutants! Just some of the good ones!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that the Avengers thought they had the right to just come to Utopia and say "give us Hope" still pisses me off. Because the Avengers have so much experience dealing with the Phoenix force.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Uhhh, I don't disagree that Cap's initial actions were pretty stupid and arrogant (ngl, I'm hoping all the recent dickery is Marvel setting him up for a fall) but for all of X-Men's "experience dealing with the Phoenix force", what they were planning to do, was attempting to push an unsure teenage girl into assuming the power and hoping The Phoenix would "fix" the Decimation and the mutant population, fuck everyone else. Scott didn't care about whether Hope was ready, whether she agreed or about her.

Doesn't sound like much of a good idea to me, given that every single one of X-Men's previous encounter with the Phoenix has ended less than favorably, whether the Force was actively pissed or not. And this time, it actually was.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they sure were lucky it wasn't heading towards a fourth planet further away. Short story.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
All I can say to this is... oh lord.

Can we kill off Scott and Emma now?

If the covers of issue 11 are any indication, they'll take care of half the problem themselves!

You fun spoiler.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hm...from your description, I feel like both sides are on fairly equal standing.

The Avengers are reasonably afraid. The Phoenix isn't to be fucked around with. And if it wants Hope, at least taking her off planet could mean it follows her.

And while it turns out the X-Men are ultimately right, I feel like The Avengers aren't exactly wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
They're not ultimately right. That's pretty unclear right now.

Good riddence Marvel ghetto!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Namor floods Wakanda (YESSSSSSSSSS)." says Insanenoodleguy. I felt the same way after Hurricane Katrina.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm staying away from it because I honestly love both teams. I'd much prefer a comic where they band together instead of a "stronger group wins" thing.

That, and I can't wrap my head around a comic that seems to be the Avengers deciding to hate a whole race.

Avengers deciding to hate a whole race.

What do you get that from? ._o
