Every other person the Phoenix force has touched it's turned into a huge dick eventually.

Every. One.

The avengers know better. Arrogant mutants just don't listen.

Well, I can't speak for the X-men, but in True Blood a lot of the vampires are mass-murdering sociopaths, so there's a teensy bit of a reason to not like them.

Beh, the X-Men are playing 'villains' because all of those flatscans are now high on Avengers-fever. Those anti-mutie assholes! MAGNETO WAS RIGHT!!!

URgh, I hate when shows try to make me regard a person/group as bad - but there is never any reason for me to dislike the person/group until the attackers provoke them to do something bad, normally in defence.

It drives me nuts. You haven't shown them do anything bad yet, why would I root against them?!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Easy.

Avengers = Shiny shiny America

Xmen = dirty nonamericans stealing american jobs and don't look american.

So America paints them as evil groups so they can feel like the good group and justify an attack because the nonamericans could potentially do harm but haven't yet.

But because the "good" team did it, they must be right so the other team MUST be bad. Because the good guys did the beating

Okay, I haven't seen True Blood and I haven't been actually reading Avengers vs X-Men, so I may be missing some information here, but...uh...when you're dealing with the Phoenix Force, it isn't something "they think is going to be a threat". It is something that everyone in the Marvel universe with two brain cells KNOWS from repeated experience (repeated, because the X-Men consistently shows themselves to be fucking arrogant morons when it comes to having perspective these kinds of things), is a huge inevitable fucking disaster waiting to happen.

Of course, that doesn't mean you should start punching people over it just because they're being stupid, or declare them illegitimate threats just because they're biased about something personal to them. Then again, Avengers vs X-Men is a completely ridiculous premise anyway. "We disagree on this, so let's beat each other up over it for no reason and even though it will accomplish absolutely jack-shit, instead of sitting down and explaining each side of the issue and either having one side convince the other that their fears are unfounded, or compromising to make both sides satisfied, like every human being over the age of 12 ought to know how to do!"

Man, I love hero vs hero fights, but what happened to those good ol' fashioned contrived misunderstandings that worked so well?

There weren't any problems when the Phoenix was bonded with Rachel Summers, or Jean Grey in Grant Morrison's run.

lol @ the idea that Marvel comics writers or editorial is going to ever make a social statement that isn't horribly fucking offensive while being totally clueless about how the fans will react.

They just want to make a half-assed attempt to cash in on the fact that The Avengers are the darlings of Marvel properties right now, and they think that obviously the best way to lick the metaphorical balls and clits of everyone checking out comics after getting hooked by the film is to have the Avengers humiliate and beat the shit out of another superteam in a id-fueled self-aggrandization fantasy masquerading as a moralistic story to show that they're the coolest kids in the class, instead of having them be badass, likable, villain-stomping heroes that readers will like on their own merits.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, you obviously have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Maybe if you had actually read a panel or two of the event you wouldn't sound quite so ignorant.

I haven't read Avengers versus X-men but I have a feeling I might want to stay away from it because I've always been more of an X-men girl then an Avengers girl. I mean my favorite Avenger is even Scarlet Witch so I'm always siding with the mutants.

Anyone want to give me a summary of what's going on? I'm so behind on my comics.

Phoenix is heading back to earth. At least two planets are eaten up on account of being in the way.

Hope Summers is clearly supposed to be the next host.

Avengers are all "hey. Maybe we should take her off the planet so that when it arrives... it doesn't burn us all to cinders in the process?"

Hope is all "actually, that doesn't sound like a bad idea..."

Scott Summers is all "Oh fuck no. I'm pretty sure this is how we restore all the mutants. I'm not fucking that chance up by changing the rules"

Fighting occurs. Phoenix arrives. Shit goes wrong, and Cyclops, Emma, Collossus, Magik, and Namor each get a fifth of the phoenix force.

Cyclops is all "hello, we are in charge of the world now. You get free energy, we are going to fix pollution and all the other problems, no more starvation."

"You also lose choice. All those big wmd's? You don't have those anymore. No, I wasn't speaking metaphorically. Go check. They are gone. We are that good."

They are all "surely the world will thank us!"

Naturally, that's not what happens. Avengers are being hunted down now, and it all unravles as the Phoenix Force starts to corrupt the five. Black Panther annuls his marriage with storm after Namor floods Wakanda (YESSSSSSSSSS).

The Avengers finally beat one of the five (Namor), only to discover this makes the phoenix force leave that one and go into all the others. Collusus and his sister beat the shit out of spiderman but he convinces them they should each attack the other to take the power for themselves. They both burn out in the ensuing fight. Spiderman mostly bleeds a lot.

Meanwhile, Emma has decided she wants to be adored. As in "adore me or I'll rewrite your thoughts till you think right."

Hope has been training with Iron Fist, as it turns out one of the few Phoenix's who didn't lose it had been trained in K'un L'un to handle the energy (the dragon that gives the iron fist it's power is said to have beaten the poneix once)

This is working well, it seems while the Phoenix Empowered can shrug off attacks that normally would take them down, Hope Jonsing on Chaos magic and the strength of the undying can fuck their shit.

Predictably, after being beaten by hope Cyclops has decided he needs all the Phoenix power, so Cyclops Emma throwdown is imminent for all of the Phoenix pie.

I'm staying away from it because I honestly love both teams. I'd much prefer a comic where they band together instead of a "stronger group wins" thing.

That, and I can't wrap my head around a comic that seems to be the Avengers deciding to hate a whole race.

...is that Lafayette in the red head wrap? Lord almighty, Racialicious wasn't kidding when they said he was starting to have a mammy look going on.

Ahem, anyway. I doubt the Avengers are anything like the vampires, because then they'd be murdering lunatics who are set up to be the heroes of the story because...why are they the heroes of the story? Because other heroes like to sleep with them? I never was sure. But considering the X-Men have always been metaphors for persecuted minorities, having a government-backed elite force go against them doesn't seem like it would make said force look very much on the side of the angels. And if they were explicitly justified, then what message does that send about minorities?

I dunno, haven't read it, but that sounds like a real potential clusterfuck.

Of course Marvel is going to have this event be a major dick sucking extravaganza for the Avengers. All those people who enjoyed the Avengers movie and made it break all kinds of records? Those are the people this event is for, not the people who've been reading the comics for years and understand how absurd all this shit is.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
i'm just saying

in any conflict between witches and draculas, i'm pretty much always going to back the witches. draculas literally want to consume the blood of human beings, real hard for me to see a situation in which the witches AREN'T the good guys. it'd be a little more complicated if it was witches versus wolfmans but i think generally being on the side of the witches is a good place to be. i am Pro Witch.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, yeah not so much. IDK True Blood so can't comment there. But while I'm not intimately familiar with Jean's and Rachel's bonding with the Phoenix, the Phoenix has been all about destruction, blowing up entire planets, and trying to blow up the earth. Marvel just did a time-travelling plot with the premise of the Phoenix destroying Earth as well. With X3 Phoenix = World-destroying dick is almost set into greater public conciousness, so obviously current storylines are going to run with it.

And Avengers "attacking first" actually allowed Hope to make a little more of her choice, instead of being thrust into it without any, by Scott, *and* first misdirected the Phoenix to away from Earth and then weakened it by splitting it into 5.

And you seriously don't understand why the Phoenix Five (note: NOT the X-Men, the Avengers seem at least somewhat aware that the meatsuits are no longer entirely in control) are villains? Wow. Dictatorship =/= Good, I can't believe I have to say this.

But then, I've never bought the "X-Men = RL minorities" anyway. Yeah, I'll buy they're the equivalent of LGBT or whatever when RL minorities have that much individual power over everyone else. The reason the concept of equality is something that theoretically works IRL and something we strive to achieve is because it's actually true and all the hateful BS about POC stereotypes, and LGBT "scares" are just that - untrue scare tactics.

Did I write this? I wish I had. Avengers vs X-Men has been such a disappointment. The Avengers were jerks in the beginning of it but we were still supposed to root for them. I get that because the Avengers movie was HUGE there was no way the Avengers were going to be written as the losers in this but damn, a little balance. Even the mutants that started on the X-Men side had switched over to the Avengers are right.
