Japan and countries that drive on the left

[personal profile] hwc 2012-09-04 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
A teacher who's been to Japan a number of times once told us that Japanese *always* take off their shoes before entering a home, even in emergency situations, like paramedics or rushing back in when you remember that you left the iron on.

How true is that?

Edit:

And people who live in countries where you drive on the left: Does it seem weird to you when you watch shows/movies/what-have-you where people drive on the right? Because I *always* expect that the next plot twist is a car crash whenever there's a scene of people driving in a UK show.

I don't live in Japan currently, but I used to. I've also done a couple of month-long stints in England.

I have to admit, I've never been in an emergency situation, but I have NEVER seen anyone wear shoes inside a home in Japan. Ever. Period. I'm sure it happens on occasion, but again, I've never seen it. Honestly, if you're rushing and you don't take the time to organize your shoes/put them away, you can get your shoes off in two seconds flat. I know because I've done it.

As for driving on the other side of the road (whatever side "other" is for you), you get used to it. If you've done a lot of mentally switching back and forth between the sides of the road, you get used to cars being on either side. If I'm watching something set in England or Japan, I'm just used to seeing cars drive on the left side. Nowadays, the only thing I notice is if it doesn't match up (you'd be surprised how often Japanese shows/movies/games/whatever are ostensibly set in the USA, but have cars drive on the left side of the road. That drives me bonkers).

The driving-on-the-wrong-side thing only weirded me out when I was actually in the States, and that's because, even though I thought I was perfectly fine with, "Oh, okay, it's keep right here, that works", any time we turned a corner, it'd seem to me like they were on the wrong side. I'd sort of brace myself for a half-second before I realised.

At least you never turned into the wrong side while you were there.

My Dad is South African and a few years ago he spent a month back home. When he came back he was driving me one day and he drove into what would have been the oncoming traffic lanes. Luckily it was asscrack o'clock so no one else was on the road and he was able to fix it when I pointed it out to him but yeah.

Good thing you haven't done that. In a way, the 'weirdness' probably made you hyperaware and less likely to relax and switch up.

Oh, I don't drive, so I was only a passanger. But yeah, that awareness probably would be a good thing.

Oh, sorry about that. My mistake.

Yeah, it's a surprisingly common mistake. I know more people who have done it than just my Dad.

Heh, it's no problem. I phrased it pretty ambiguously.

Yeah. It's one of the reasons I AM glad I don't drive, since I'm from Australia but want to live part-time in the States, and I know that I'd eventually get too used to it and slip up... public transport is so much easier!

Yeah it is. When it's available public transport is fabulous. It's even more fabulous when they work out deals with residents and stuff.

Deals are good? XD Thankfully, the city I want to move to has pretty extensive public transport! (Icon very very relevent.)

Well, I mean, I get to ride certain busses for free because of the school I go to. It's nice.

Ah, yeah, San Fran has a much better system than my city. I hope you like it there.

Ohh, okay. Yeah, that works too!

I do like it there :) Would love to make it full-time!

Yay! Come to San Francisco! Yes!

Sorry. I get excited for my city sometimes.

SF's public transportation is definitely good - certainly better than most places in America - but it can be really frustrating sometimes, either through delays, slow travel, being really crowded, or just being grungy. But it's mostly pretty great for getting around. Hope you find your way here and enjoy it!

I love SF <3 Been there a few times, in both summer and winter, and it's just... love it. I just graduated with a science degree and a major in museum studies, so once I do my Master's, I'd love to come over and work for the California Academy of Science or the Exploratorium (or others, but those are my favourites!).

The driving on the right thing I'm acclimatised to. What always gets me that cars here (austalia) are right hand drive, whereas cars in the US (and I assume any righthand driving nations) the cars are lefthand drive. There's almost always a moment of wtf when someone on TV gets in a car (especially on their own) and gets into the passenger seat.

I have the same problem, but the other way because I live in the US. "Where are you-oh, wait, right. Steering wheel on the other side" *facepalm*

If I'm reading something set in a left-side driving place, like, say, fic for a British show, and there's a scene inside a car, I sometimes suddenly realize that I've been imagining it all wrong because the driver and passenger should be switched.

The one time I've dealt with the paramedics there was no actual home left to go inside, but I've absolutely never seen anyone wear shoes inside someone else's house. I've had furniture delivered and set up in my apartment, and the guys still took their shoes off. I even had to call animal control once for a dead pigeon on my balcony, and the guy took his shoes off and carried them out to the balcony with him.

As with the christmas thread up ahead - you learn to ignore the driving on the tv. I suspect it would be very different in person though. I'd be terrified of being run over.

It never registers with me when watching American (etc) media that the cars are on the opposite side... but then again I've been over to France on school trips and not noticed we were on the other side of the road sooo. Might be cause I don't drive!
