hair care question
(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)How often is it normal to wash your hair? Is it really so abnormal not to style it every day?
My hairdresser pretty much gave me a lecture when I told her I never style it.
I wash it twice a week. I know some people wash it more frequently than that but if I wash it any more than every 2-3 days it gets too dry and my scalp gets itchy. She seemed completely horrified that I didn't wash it every day.
When I asked her to only take off a few centimetres she said "What do you want long hair for?" I said I just prefer it long and she asked again "What for? What are you going to do with it?" I had no idea what to say because I honestly don't even know what the fuck 'doing something with it' even means. If she means all the curling irons/hairspray and complicated braids stuff, I've never done it before because a)I don't have the time b) I don't have the money c) I don't know how to do it properly and would probably fuck it up and d) I really don't care all that much.
I tried to appease her by saying I'd consider getting it dyed but she said "well where's the point in that if you're not going to bother to look after it properly?"
And she cut off about twice as much as I wanted. So I am sitting here with my way too short hair feeling rather angry but I'm not sure if I'm right or being silly about it. The reason why I wanted it kept long, and loathe short hair so much is because my mother has forced me to have the same ugly short-as-a-boy's hair cut* my whole life and I had only just gotten her to let me have it the way I wanted it in the last few years. I let her drag me there with the assurance that she and the hairdresser wouldn't do what they'd done every single other time I'd been (tell me I was getting a little trim and then hack half it off) but apparently she lied again.
But still, it's just hair, so am I overreacting or was she out of line?
*Disclaimer: I don't have a problem with other girls having short hair, or anyone having whatever sort of hair they want, I just personally can't stand it for myself.
Re: hair care question
(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)And I wash it every day mostly, but that's because my hair is fine and straight, so it gets greasy and ratty if I don't. If your hair doesn't do that, then no you don't need to wash it more often. And the less you wash it, generally the better condition the hair will be in (assuming you aren't going swimming or whatever). If your hair is wavy or curly, chances are it would be a nightmare if you washed it every day.
So either you had a really crappy hairdresser, or your mother paid her to say ridiculous shit.
Re: hair care question OP
(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 01:00 am (UTC)(link)She phrased it in this douchey way, like clearly I was a lazy slob for not doing what "all the other girls your age are doing" and I'm like no I'm pretty sure I know people who don't do that.
Lol, sadly that's possible since they're friends. But the other two hairdressers in the salon agreed with her.
Re: hair care question
(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)I don't style my hair (it's naturally curly so sometimes I don't even brush it) and wash it every other day because otherwise it gets greasy. As a hairdresser, she should know not all hair is the same, and it can be unhealthy to constantly wash and style it.
(My hairdresser actually complimented me for leaving mine alone)
The whole 'No point to long hair if you don't style it' exchange was just...weird. What's wrong with just having long hair? That's basically a style all of its own. Maybe she thought you were neglecting it somehow? Did she mention that it looked unhealthy/that you were doing something wrong?
Either there was a cross-wire in communication or she seriously overstepped herself.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 12:52 am (UTC)(link)I hadn't had it cut in about three years because I hate hairdressers so much (some people have phobias of dentists or doctors, I get to be weird and have a phobia of hairdressers, yay) so there were a lot of split ends. But she cut off way more than just the parts that looked bad. She also told me that I was letting it get too dry by not conditioning it, but the last time I went there she told me that my type of hair doesn't need conditioner, so idek.
She also pressured me into having it layered when I only wanted a normal trim because "Oh well you have to do something with it." I hate having it layered because I've had it like that before and it keeps falling out of a ponytail and I hate bobbypins. She tried to make me get a fringe as well but I put my foot down. She got all huffy.
Now that I think about it, my mother would have been telling her all kinds of crap about me not looking after my hair (it takes so long to brush that I only brush it if I'm leaving the house, which apparently constitutes hair abuse) so I guess she had preconceived notions.
And now I'm feeling creeped out wondering if that's how she knew to suggest the three specific things I hate about how my hair was when I was little (short, layered and fringe)
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 01:06 am (UTC)(link)(I'm the same as you, rarely going to a hairdresser. Idk- it's hair. It's not that interesting to me)
Sometimes their advice can be helpful, but it seems to me that she needs to work on her customer care. My hairdresser convinced me to get a fringe with some friendly advice and careful explanation of what she'd do and constantly asking me if 'this is alright'. Seems like you had one that doesn't know how to sell her skills :/
Next time try putting your foot down...politely. The line "I'm really not comfortable with this" usually works. You are a customer after all.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 10:54 am (UTC)(link)Re: hair care question
(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)never go there again. if you ever feel the need to get your hair done again, choose the salon yourself, don't let your mum do it. i tell my hairdressers i am very busy and don't have time to do any styling so i need a low maintenance cut (= no fringe, no layering) and i've never gotten any flak for it.
