"Looking back, I wasn't entirely happy with the way the fic was going, so I'm removing it and rewriting it."

There you go. People do this all the freaking time.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
this.

you could probably even mention that there was previously someone else helping you with the fic and now that they're gone you'd like to take it in a new direction.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That seems unnecessary, especially if the goal is to avoid drama.

OP here: I have actually only seen someone do that once, so I didn't know. Thank you very much.

Yeah, and .... your previous beta might not have been malicious ... just a shitty beta.

I also agree with previous commentor - drop in a preface saying you decided to do a major overhaul, and then have at it.

OP here: my previous beta wasn't malicious but pushed me to write the story she wanted to read but could never find. Which I now realize was because she wanted an OOC mess justifying her personal headcanon of emo and manpain.

Thank you for your advice, I've maybe seen someone do it once.

A. That's still a shitty beta. Really good betas help you figure out how to write the story YOU want to tell, and keep you from mucking your own creation up.

(Not that they can't have opinions.)

Well, I'm encouraging you to overhaul. Maybe you even title it "[Old Title]: reboot" or "[Old title]: 2012 Edition" or something like that. If readers did feel that the original version turned into a hot mess, then perhaps being up front with the fact that it's a makeover will actually bring people in.

(And fwiw, I've done a number of rethinks on multichapter WIPs ... sometimes after a period of years. Writing can in fact be more like a garden than a bronze sculpture, imo.)

Sure you can delete and repost. Even in a small fandom. Put up a notice that it's an extensive rewrite. You may find yourself gaining back the audience your poor choices lost you.

OP here: Thank you for your advice. I was very active in the fandom, and my poor choices cost me some casual friends. I'm going to do the rewrite; what's the worst that could happen?

Delete and repost. Since it's a small fandom, you might want to put something in the summary saying it's a revised version so people don't expect something entirely new when they click on it.

OP here: Thank you for your advice. I'm putting something in the summary but I do hope when people click on it they'll find something mostly new.

I don't see anything wrong with saying that, after the hiatus, you realized you were about to write yourself into a plothole and you need to revise the fic, or something like that. Don't lay the blame on anyone else and you should avoid any major drama - and if you can fix the fic, you might be able to salvage its reputation.

OP here: Thank you for your advice. When I came back from hiatus I didn't have any fandom friends to ask if it was a good idea and how to avoid airing the drama that lead to the hiatus in the first place.
