I also agree with previous commentor - drop in a preface saying you decided to do a major overhaul, and then have at it.

Well, I'm encouraging you to overhaul. Maybe you even title it "[Old Title]: reboot" or "[Old title]: 2012 Edition" or something like that. If readers did feel that the original version turned into a hot mess, then perhaps being up front with the fact that it's a makeover will actually bring people in.
(And fwiw, I've done a number of rethinks on multichapter WIPs ... sometimes after a period of years. Writing can in fact be more like a garden than a bronze sculpture, imo.)
