That writing style makes my eyes bleed. I never had any interest in Homestuck anyway, but just the weird writing styles would be enough to turn me off.

IDK if the entire comic is like that but if it is, holy hell, I can never read it. I couldn't even tell what some of THAT said. (Okay, if I put a little more effort into it I probably could, but what you said about eye bleeding.)
grimdarning: (remnants)

[personal profile] grimdarning 2012-09-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of it isn't THAT bad, some of the quirks and colors are more readable than others (red is particularly eye-searing, definitely on the worse end, and only one of the main characters uses it) but a lot of the text is colored one way or another. That particular character's letter su6stitutions are definitely on the harder-to-parse end of the spectrum, too.

There is a full text log of the comic, with links to the panels, and you could pretty easily C/P it to word and turn it all to black text, but that doesn't help much if it's the quirks that make it hard to read (although I found they got easier to understand a lot quicker than I expected.)

TLDR it's all like that but not QUITE as egregiously, and there are workarounds available for people who want to try them but nothing will ever make HS a normal reading experience.

I think most colored text I could do, it's more the ‘quirks’. I rarely read anything that involves tons of spelling errors or misuse of capitalization, and I think it might be difficult to just go with that. This is a bit of a stupid reason to not want to read something I guess, but just in case I decide to I'm gonna save this link for future reference. Ty for that! (I hope it helps someone else, too.)

Agreed. I can handle walls of text, but not when they're pants-on-head stupid walls of text.

The stupid does have consistency though.

Except one character who's quirk is missleping and then making corrections.

Hussie's not the most senstive of folk, clearly, but since I think the "transethnic" tumblr thing that's being mocked here is in fact incredibly disrespectful to actual transgendered people, I don't have a problem with this.

Shocking nobody... this was my favorite moment.

Kankri was introduced in a tumblr parody. Of course this type needed to be brought up!

I remember reading a good breakdown of the matter on Tumblr shortly after the walkaround came out, that it's not really a criticism of the social justice movement so much as it is of the part of it that is only in it to look superior to other people. He is Saviour Complex: The Character. Appropriately enough, given his A2 incarnation.
brightblueink: Text: H--Hikkikomori (Hikkikomori)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-09-08 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a homestuck (yet...) but, honestly...at least out of context this joke doesn't look that bad, and a lot of "social justice blogging" on tumblr sort of deserves to be mocked, I think. There's a lot of people tossing around terms they don't understand and slapping trigger warnings onto everything to the point that the word is becoming meaningless.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering he just funded his Kickstarter with nearly 900K in just a couple a days, with almost an entire month to go... I sincerely doubt he alienated enough fans for it to even matter, certainly not enough for him to care about it.

Anyway, I thought it was pretty clear it was making fun of people who claim to be about social justice but are all talk, no action. And even more, only care about their pet social justice while ignoring others - and even engage in it themselves.

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2012-09-09 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on both points. (Is that a +1, or a +1 +1? a +2?)

There were bits that made me wonder if it was aimed at all folk who care about sensitivity or social issues (cisblood? really?). But once it was clear that Kankri is an obvious sexist asshole, it tipped right into "classic sj hypocrite that simply loves to bandy about all the words (aka: the sjw)".

I don't know if Porrim was supposed to be some kind of FemRA, but I liked that she reads to me as feminist, while also not invalidating things that did happen on their planet when it existed. I'll take a straw-man tumblr sjw over a straw-man feminist anyday tbh.

[personal profile] grimdarning 2012-09-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think cisblood was *supposed* to be aimed at all that 'transethnic' bullshit, rather than actual transgendered people, but it's not like you can actually clarify that in the text, so it still looks...a little potentially side-eye worthy.

Porrim's total comparative sanity, even though (and partly because) she had her own particular issues that she focused on definitely helped, imo.

cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2012-09-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I only just checked tumblr to see if Hussie was simply making up words that begin with 'cis', and oh gdi. Here I was giving the benefit of a doubt that nobody actually uses 'cis-ethnic' as an actual thing, and why is it an actual thing. I knew 'transethnic' was there, but omg how the hell is 'cis-ethnic' less offensive to these people.

it's implying actual racial minorities have the privilege of being a racial minoritagosiugvb

Yeah, I dunno, that "otherblood" and "polyblood" stuff sounded like it was aimed at nonbinary trans people to me. That was the only thing in Kankri's dialog that really bothered me.

Yes, exactly. I think of Kankri as a SJW, who likes using terms and making a show about ~caring~ and ~being so sensitive~ while actually harboring equally problematic attitudes. On the other hand, the Sufferer is the Kankri that actually got off his butt, preached equality because he meant it and not because it looked cool. Because, in fact, it didn't look cool, and he ended up dying over it.

...So, basically, the Sufferer is Superior-Kankri.

In a way, I think all the ancestors are basically what the alpha-trolls wished they could be.

I'm not so sure about that. For one, it seems that Latula is pretty much who she wanted to be. And that'd say some bad things about Aranea.

Edit: And no way Captor wants to be a meat puppet for the Batterwitch.

I thought the whole point of Kankri was to be an obnoxious rambler. And rambling he does. Honestly? I can't even make sense of what he's saying and it's not because of the typing quirk. I read the sentences and can't for the life of me figure out what he's trying to say. Apparently it has to do with "social justice"? I don't know. I avoid Tumblr like the plague and I'm not really into the whole troll culture. It's all going way over my head.

To me, Kankri just seems like a pretentious, know-it-all prick who reads too much into things, so maybe people need to stop reading too much into him in turn? Just my two cents.

Edit: Oh and before someone writes up tl;dr: I am not interested in clarification about the deeper meaning of Kankri's words. I don't care what he's trying to say and why it's supposedly insensitive. Please don't take this the wrong way. It just sounds like a whole load of conflict I don't want to get involved in.

Well, I'm not going to write up that summary, just give a bit of perspective.

Andrew Hussie is known for "Making character you'd hate, then making you love them" That's kind of his thing.

The original trolls tended to be aspects of the internet that were annoying beyond their typing quirks in some way subtle or blatant.

The Ancestor trolls in particular seem to be Tumblr related. And while some find the caricature more offensive and some funnier, Kankri is very obviously supposed to be a dig at the SJW.

As for the typing quirks...

iF YOU, uHH, rEAD IT LONG ENOUGH I THINK, yOU KNOW, yOU GET USED TO IT.

Yes, I know about Hussie's thing with the trolls. And I know you get used to the typing quirks. Again, Kankri's typing quirk really isn't why I can't understand what he's talking about. It's because his sentences are so long and boring and full of ridiculous words.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-09-09 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. Well, that's pretty much exactly what the character was meant to be, I think.

As much as we don't want to admit it, Homestuck is not for everybody.
