Heh, I'm laughing at your icon...you didn't like HBP?

*g* Credit goes to [personal profile] grazhir for that one. I share the sentiment at least partly - I did like HBP a lot, actually, until JKR mentioned somewhere in an interview that HBP and DH were meant to be one book and she decided to split up the story because she lacked time writing.

...that sounds like a really bad idea, and I'm glad it was split, even if HBP is my least favorite book.

It also sounds like she didn't quite think of the significance of 7 with that original idea - unless there would have been a story after the death of Voldemort to be book 7...

I'm assuming she lost track of her story once she decided to stray from her original path with OotP and had to make all kinds of changes. I'm kind of angry at myself now for reading all her interviews, but I guess I didn't know better then. It's a huge part of the reason why I keep away from author sites or actor interviews, etc, these days.

Man, DH was the biggest bummer ever (although I actually didn't mind the epilogue). It seemed like JKR really wanted to do something awesome and epic, but she just couldn't manage to get it right and went "okay whatever" during one of the preliminary drafts instead of figuring out how to do it properly. The buildup from HBP was amazing, but the payoff made it turn into pretty much the definition of that Expectations, Reality meme.

In fact I need an Expectations, Reality gif. *hunts around in tumblr folder of bookmarks*

EXPECTATIONS

REALITY

I hate the epilogue with power of a thousand suns. "All was well." ??? WTF, no, don't give me that bullshit, JKR!

I think the problem was that JKR started the books as some kind of wish-fulfillment thing. I mean, she was un-employed, divorced and had a kid to feed and had no idea how to do that. She kind of wrote her own type of Cinderella story and dreamed of a better life. Which she got - over the course of the series the books became insanely popular, she made millions, re-married and had more kids - and all her old sorrows went away.

And it's only natural that with her new life came a shift of priorities, too. So she lost interest in her original story and started changing things (first in OotP, as she said in one of her interviews), and had to keep changing more because of that. And that's how we got HBP and DH.

...I don't get what the problem is with "All was well", tbh. Kinda cheesy wording? Yeah. But "bullshit"? I mean, would you have rather it ended with cold misery and grimmness and an assurance that his life was still shit and things were never going to change? It was nineteen years later, Harry had a wife and kids and some of his friends were still alive. I'm sure everything wasn't perfect, but he finally had some semblance of a normal life that was pretty damn good in comparison to his time fighting Voldemort, and Voldemort was gone and the war had finally faded away into the past. I think "All was well" was a pretty good way to finish off a series that was seven straight years of death and destruction and danger and things going to shit.

Mind you, the cutesy way the epilogue was written was still cheesy as hell.

I guess I should have elaborated on why I thought the epilogue was bullshit. *wry*

It was the whole idea about marriage and kids being the ultimate reward for all the hardships in life that annoyed me to no end. Yes, I know that for Harry it's certainly true, because he kept wishing for a real family over the course of all the seven books. I can totally be happy with that.

But extending that view to the whole cast? Going so far as saying that Teddy was only finally "really" part of the family because of marrying Victoire? Cementing that view by constantly talking about who ended up married to whom in several interviews? No, thanks. I don't care for authors trying to impose their opinions on the value of family/kids/marriage at every opportune moment.

That's what made me angry at the "all is well" thing, what made me stay away from all further interviews, and what makes me stay away now from all kinds of author sites/actor interviews/etc in my current fandoms.

Ahhhhh...that makes way more sense. Yeah, the whole "omg tying up all loose ends" thing really bugged me in the epilogue too.

So disappointing, isn't it? All that awesome build-up and then we got that at the end.

That's funny, seeing as most fans thought it was one of the best, if not THE best of the series. It depends on who you ask. It sucks that it disappointed you, though. Never fun to have a series fail you at the end.

....are you serious? Where did you hear this? Do you mean the best movie? Because as far as I can remember, I've NEVER heard a single person ever call it the best book. Never. Not once in my entire time in fandom.

Wow, really? That's a bit of a surprise for me. I mean, okay, people's tastes differ a lot, and there were certainly people in my fandom circle who didn't hate it, but I haven't seen anyone saying they thought it was (one of) the best.

Never fun to have a series fail you at the end.
Yeah, so true. *wry*
