Have you ever been really excited for something

[personal profile] dm21 2012-09-08 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And then discovered it's not what you thought it was?

For instance, I was pretty excited to learn there was going to be a Luigi’s Mansion 2 for handheld. Then, I learned it was for the 3DS and the 3DS only (I only have the DS Lite and don’t have any desire to upgrade).

I had been waiting years to be able to own and play a Luigi’s Mansion game for myself. Now, I’m still waiting.

Ah, the evolution of games. I'm grateful Black/White 2 will still be for the DS, because I too only have a Lite and no will to upgrade.

For me, it's always "Look at this nice movie...playing in limited release...600 miles away."

Man, DH was the biggest bummer ever (although I actually didn't mind the epilogue). It seemed like JKR really wanted to do something awesome and epic, but she just couldn't manage to get it right and went "okay whatever" during one of the preliminary drafts instead of figuring out how to do it properly. The buildup from HBP was amazing, but the payoff made it turn into pretty much the definition of that Expectations, Reality meme.

In fact I need an Expectations, Reality gif. *hunts around in tumblr folder of bookmarks*

That's funny, seeing as most fans thought it was one of the best, if not THE best of the series. It depends on who you ask. It sucks that it disappointed you, though. Never fun to have a series fail you at the end.

The new Teen Titans cartoon, before I found out it was going to be all chibi and comedy-centric (my excitement lasted all of five minutes). It still might be good, but I'd really prefer the old show back.

Oh sad day. When I read "new Teen Titans" I was all excited, until I finished your sentence and then I was sad. It was a very emotional sentence.

I was excited for a new game in the .hack// series, when pictures of my favourite characters in gorgeous new outfits were released.

Then I saw a video of my number one favourite acting in a skeevy OOC way, and sank into horror.

Then I found out that it wasn't really him, it was a sort of AI copy. Also the game has never been released outside of Japan, and most of the fandom hates it anyway. So I'm chill again.

the last couple of books of stephen king's dark tower series.

also, re: 3DS -- wait about a year and then pick one up, you won't be sorry. i upgraded from my old phat stupid DS1 -- the original model -- and even though i spent like $250 on it before the price drop (and now they're putting out a new version, thanks nintendo) i don't regret my purchase. the virtual console alone is a selling point.

Yes, the last season of LOST. The writers had been going on and on about how the mysteries would be answered and that if you pay attention the clues were there. Then season six came and the writers went, "Mysteries? What mysteries? LOST has always been about the characters. The mysteries don't matter." And the wrote the ending not even as such. They just killed characters randomly or changed their personality 180 and made it about that Jack and Kate with a few instances of Hurley. (Hurley became nothing more than comedy relief.)

Loved LOST seasons 1-5 and half. The rest can go jump into a lake.

I submitted a secret about mine a while back because it was pretty embarrassing, but Paranorman.

I saw the trailer shown with the Olympics which had a zombie gymnast and thought that was an awesome premise for a movie- and then a few days later I found out what the actual plot was about and was irrationally disappointed.

I had the same thing happen with the news of a playable female character in the new Assassin's Creed - only to find out it was only for the Vita. :(

...As a gamer, I'm a little surprised that you expected the game to be on the DS? The 3DS is a true new handheld, not just an upgrade to the DS or anything. The DS couldn't handle the graphics that Luigi's Mansion 2 has in it, for starters. I know it might be frustrating if you're not interested in buying a new handheld or console but that's sort of the nature of the industry.

Aaaaanyway, I'm starting to feel that way about The Hobbit films. I'm still trying to be hopeful about them, but the idea of them being 3 movies is making me a little worried. The Hobbit isn't nearly as long as LOTR is, it doesn't need that many movies.

I also feel that way about World Embryo's American license. It got picked up by Tokyopop, then mysteriously a year later by Dark Horse (which was a good thing, because Tokyopop had been declining in quality and went out of the manga business a few years after this). Dark Horse announced they had the license 4 years ago, and then...nothing. 2 years ago someone who works for DH admitted on a podcast that there had been some sort of 'internal complications' (paraphrased, but it was something like that) that was preventing the manga from coming out in the US. Now I fear we won't ever get that manga in the USA. :( (I did just remember that it's in English in editions for Australia and Singapore, I think, but...I don't want to import books from there on the off chance it DOES come out in my country.) So I'm importing it from Japan soon to support Daisuke Moriyama since he's my favorite mangaka.

I'm going to second that you should consider buying a 3ds when the price has gone down. I bought one because my DS stopped working (and I wanted to upgrade since Ocarina of Time came out) and OMG it is so worth it. People got obsessed with the "3d" aspect (because some people find the 3d neat and some people hate it, but it doesn't matter either way because you can turn it on and off) and didn't really realize how much farther the technology has gone with the 3ds. It's basically like having a handheld wii... but better.

There aren't many 3ds exclusive games out yet so you can definitely wait, but I'd recommend getting one.

Sucker Punch. I thought it would be a film about an all-superheroines team kicking ass and taking names in a semi-realistic setting.

Then I watched the trailer.

Supernatural season 6. :/

I know there are a lot of people who didn't enjoy 4+, anyway, but I really liked it up to 6, and even considered SPN my main fandom. :(

Well, in the same vein of your experience, I get excited for games all the time before realizing I won't ever play them because I don't have their consoles. All the time. :(

Tron Legacy. I was so pumped for it, nearly drooled over the trailers. I enjoyed the film a lot because of the music and the visual effects, but the story just sort of fell flat a bit. I was hoping for something much more interesting given the concept. That said, I still love watching it because of the Daft Punk music video aspect.

Voltron Force, and the Thundercats reboot. I'm still a huge fan of both originals 80's weirdness and all.

Voltron Force is worse by far. I just stopped watching after the episode where they got their asses handed to them by "Cliche Evil Voltron Replica" what ever it was called, and they decided the only solution was basically to see what new Deus ex Machina the obnoxious MacGuffin trio could pull out of their asses.

Thundercats had a great start, as it went on some episodes were better than others, but over all I liked it. Then they brought in Pumyra(who was the most interesting character to me.) and everything with her went into complete WTF territory. Now it looks like there won't be another season to find out what the hell is going on with a character plot line that makes no sense.
