Original BSG vs. 2004 remake?

[identity profile] with-rainfall.livejournal.com 2012-09-08 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I'm about six episodes in to the original (1979/80) Battlestar Galactica, and I'm really enjoying the cheesy sci-fi and the "We are heroes, let's go and save the world" vibe. Not a fan of some of the plots (this from a girl who's never seen a Western). I've only seen one episode of the remake, and I loved female!Boomer and Roslin, but the others didn't seem to have the intensity of their 1980 counterparts. The black and gray morality of the Cylons seemed interesting, though.

Thoughts on the two series? Do you love one and hate the other, or do they each have their own pros and cons?

I have seen original BSG, but it's not something I love. I remember seeing it as a kid and thinking that it's not as good as Star Trek or Star Wars. However, the reimagined Battlestar Galactica has very unique characters and a take on the mythos. I love the music, and the cinematography. I also love the genderflip they did (Starbuck mostly, because as much as I love Boomer, we got Athena from it). I think the storylines are really interesting altough they do sometimes fall short...Yeah. I think it's worth watching. There are parts I don't like (Athena, Baltar, head!Cylon, some of the religious stuff...but not all of it). I think the world building was amazing...yeah I'm a big fan, sorry. xD

I love the original. I have tried to like the remake, but it was just too soap opera IN SPACE for me.

Loved the original, saw it as a kid and it was SCI FI IN SPACE SO COOL!!

I was in love with Starbuck, my sister loved Apollo. There was an episode with unicorns. Yeah, it was awesome.

I saw bits of the reboot and it didn't wow me.

Never seen the original but it's never done anything for me based on the snippets I've seen.

They probably do have their ups and downs but the reboot is amazing IMO. It's not the most amazingly planned out series ever (the end is kind of... stupid) but the issues it deals with are incredibly interesting. One of my favourite subplots is when they realize their population is in critical danger of going extinct, and they wonder if they have to ban abortions. The president mentions how she's fought for a woman's right to her own body her entire career, but what do you do in that position? It also deals with loads of things like genocide, ethics, religion, war, and loads and loads of politics. The Reboot is almost not even Sci-Fi, it's more like a political/war drama set in space, with a pretty damn good science team (obviously not perfect, but a lot of their science is pretty good).

Also the characters in the reboot are AWESOME. They're all so fucked up. Roslin, Adama, Starbuck, Caprica Six, and Baltar especially.
