Yeah, that was kind of a misstep...I noticed that this was maybe the only episode that truly tried to shoehorn a lesson in (E4 was a bit more subtle about it).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It was kind of a dumb misstep and it's a good point to make. It's not a perfect show and probably no one should have been expecting it to have been a perfect show, it did something stupid in an episode, okay.

What is this show?

Gravity Falls.

Gravity Falls

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It definitely wasn't my favorite episode and I kind of rolled my eyes at the lesson, but the training song pretty much redeemed it for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
i didn't read it like this at all? i read it as, being a man is the same as being a decent human being, but that trait isn't totally exclusive to manliness. to each their own, though.

That's how I read it too! Like, being grown-up/mature/worthy of respect is dependent on being a good person and standing up for yourself and your convictions, being confident in your *own* manliness and defining it for yourself instead of by being masculine or macho.

I never felt like the show was implying that being a woman required anything less/different, mostly because Mabel as an individual character is more secure in herself in a lot of ways, so she doesn't need that same lesson ep.

I can see how someone else could read it that way, though, and that interpretation is definitely more bothersome. I'm sorry if people are being dicks to you over criticizing the show, OP.

Yeah this. I thought the point was Dipper realising that he didn't have to be 'manly' to be comfortable with himself. I don't really follow OP's point.

However, I'm not going to attack them over it. Jesus people, can we have one fandom where people aren't gigantic dicks to each other over opinions? :|

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I really loved it at first, but I think it's going in an odd direction. Not very continuity heavy, at least. Dipper rarely uses his book anymore. And a lot of the plots are about MablevsPacifica or DipperVSRobbie. Just...why?
morieris: http://iconography.dreamwidth.org/32982.html (Default)

[personal profile] morieris 2012-09-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a feeling that further down the line, continuity would have screwed it over in away. I do miss the book, but at least [Spoilers] Gideon is coming back in a bigger role than Irrational Treasure.

I'm just surprised that Waddles came back.

I notice the most recent ep ("Fight Fighters") is kind of a rehash of "Dipper vs. Manliness" too. Dipper is still dealing with his masculinity issues, while Mabel is relegated to a boring B-plot about helping Grunkle Stan in some way. Not my favorite eps.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the message was that it doesn't make you any less of a man to like "girly" stuff or do good things for people. It's been a while since I've seen the episode, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, more like 'manliness' isn't defined by physical strength, and being weaker than a lumberjack doesn't make you any less of a man.

I think it was pretty clear that the episode was about man vs boy, not man vs girl, an frankly I think your attempt to shoehorn in the offensive meaning is quite frankly your problem, no one else's.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope they give more depth to Pacifica, or at least something I'm sort of surprised they had such a generically 'popular bitch girl' character, TBH. And Mable's friends....The girl with the guy voice? Just, wow.

The entire episode is about masculinity. Not adulthood. When Grunkle Stan says what Dipper did was manly, after he's been using "manly" to refer to maleness, what do you think he means?

Yeah that ep made me uncomfortable. Also Dipper is sometimes a "nice guy" with Wendy, but luckily that hasn't been too heavy-handed (yet).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sort of put off by the whole issue with Robbie. He's not that much of a jerk, he's nice to Wendy.

Well I don't think any reasonable person really thinks Gravity Falls is perfect. I love it but even without this episode I could name some of its flaws.

Though I guess if you want a peaceful fan experience, mentioning this wouldn't be wise unless you knew the people you were talking to wouldn't harp on you for it.

OT, but is it just me, or is this show very... internet-y? I can't tell if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but just absolutely everything about it screams INTERNET CULTURE to me, which is a little distracting. No wonder Mabel is everybody's darling, she's the posterchild for this.
