THISTHISTHIS. One thing that annoys me about the haters is that they really don't understand that you don't have to approve of a character's actions in order to like them/find them interesting.

Also, to the haters: You know why supervillains have fans? Because even though they're evil, they're FUN with their hamminess and their speeches and their doomed-to-fail, larger-than-life machinations. We enjoy them because we know they can't win and because they aren't realistic. They're crazy and over-the-top, so people enjoy them. Get over it.

Oh man, hammy villains are my favorite thing EVER. Like, seriously, I could've happily watched Loki swaggering around acting like a vicious fabulously-dressed bratty little shit in Stuttgart for, like, an hour straight. Plus, hammy villains' temper tantrums are just so cathartic and id-driven, it's just enjoyable to watch them be totally lacking in morals. 'Cause as much as people won't admit it, pretty much everyone has briefly felt a little bit like destroying or conquering at some point:

I'm not sure what haters you're addressing. That is all very sane and the normal way most people enjoy media, but I was under the impression that the "hating" we like to talk about was directed at the crazy fans to whom none of that apply and who really do approve of Loki's actions and think he was justified.

Maybe I sound like I'm playing devil's advocate here. I just have never in my entire life seen someone say that a person should not enjoy Loki as a villain. I don't know where you guys hang out that that happens.

Actually, I've seen people around here try to explain how irrational Loki's actions were and what some appropriate reactions would have been, and then go on about how that's why they don't like him. And they never seem to get that they're completely missing the point. It's ridiculous.

Really? Not the OP, but I've seen a lot of that. The "I like him because he's not REALLY evil" fans are the easiest to criticize, but plenty of people seem to genuinely believe there's a right way to enjoy media, and it involves identifying with the heroes, and wanting the villain to get thoroughly smacked down. They can be very dogmatic about insisting that villain fans are doin' it wrong. They equate liking a character with approving of everything that character does, I think. And they seem more capable of understanding what the woobie-fen are doing (misinterpreting a bad guy as the secret hero of the story) than what villain fans do (enjoy the character with all their faults, and not despite them). But the "Loki isn't a good guy" argument is couched in a bigger value judgment that you should only like good guys.

I'm the anon that started this thread and this is exactly what I'm talking about. You've worded it much better than I ever could.

They're linked to the people who say "Why can't they just kill the ~hugely popular~ villain? I want a new villain every episode, I'm bored of this one. They're only keeping him on for the fangirls."

As if Moriarty and the Joker had never happened and all villains were interchangeable blobs for the Identifiable Heroes to defeat.
