My one issue with this show, and one no one has yet bothered to explain to me, is why Watson's backstory was so radically altered while Holmes is still British and worked with the Yard in the past. If anyone can do that now, please, feel free. Because right now, to me, it just reeks of 'a woman can't be a war veteran, silly people (never mind that the real world has plenty) and she can't be successful as a surgeon'. Why?

That said, not a BBC Sherlock fan.

They changed her back story because she's a woman. No really that's what they said. We're supposed to over look that she's pretty much Holmes babysitter instead of the friend he choose to spend time with and that she's not even allowed to be a Doctor because...yay female Watson?

Seriously. The very bad b movies where Sherlock Holmes was unfrozen in the future and had Watson great great granddaughter as a side kick was better. At least she was a police psychologist.

So they strip Watson of fundamental characteristics: competent doctor, war veteran, someone Holmes CHOOSES to spend time with rather than gets stuck with and we're supposed to be happy because yay, woman?

The odds of my giving this show a chance are decreasing the more I learn about it. Seriously, I would have been over the moon had they kept Watson's backstory. This? Extremely disappointing.

idc about anything else because im not into elementary, but watson's background as a war vetern really wasnt that important lmfao, tired of seeing people clutching their pearls over it

it's just to explain why he had a gun

And I'm tired of people dismissing legitimate arguments as 'pearl clutching'. It's rather poor form in a debate, don't you think?

As for Watson's background. It is, in fact, important in the way we understand and interpret Watson other than 'he can haz gun noa'. There are many, many more ways to explain the presence of a gun. Watson is Holmes's foil ("One that by contrast underscores or enhances the distinctive characteristics of another"). Holmes subverts authority, being smarter than the police and solving cases. Watson worked with authority in the army, but is still smart en fast enough to be interesting to Holmes.

And even if you don't accept that argument, at least think about this: there is an undeniable difference between 'war veteran and respected doctor' and 'no longer allowed to practice medicine'.
