Austrian perspective
(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 06:37 am (UTC)(link)Yes, I'm sure you can still hear my hopefully mild accent, and it might get more pronounced when I try to speak faster or when I'm upset, but just replacing every "th" with "z" and every "w" with "v", as it is always done, does not reflect the way I speak (and the way other German-speaking people speak) at all.
Are there people with a really noticeable accent who can't pronounce their th's? Yes, especially among older people or people who are just starting to learn English. But does everybody do it? No.
Also, for the love of god, don't have your German-speaking characters spice up their dialogue with random German words. Especially not Fräulein. We stopped using Fräulein in the 90s. Elder people may still use it out of habit, but younger people don't. As for swearing, we use some English swears (fuck and shit, mostly) so it's fine to use those. I know that not having a person reply with "ja" and "nein" all the time should be a no-brainer, but considering that one of the best-selling books currently has a character who constantly says "dios mio", I thought it would be worth mentioning.
Re: Austrian perspective
(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 08:24 am (UTC)(link)I hate it so much when they throw random German words in. Especially since the character never uses German words in-show.
It reminds me of otakus replacing "cute" with "kawaii" and adding "-sama" to each name just to "sound Japanese", ugh.
Re: Austrian perspective
(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 08:42 am (UTC)(link)The only time this should happen is when a character isn't focusing or under severe stress. For example, that one scene in Inglourious Basterds at the beginning, where they change languages. The French guy slips up once and immediately corrects himself. That's what would happen in real life, non of this, "Nein, mein Fräulein," business.
