On the one hand I want to say what does it matter to you, what your friends are reading in their free time?

On the other hand I can kind of understand if you want to talk books with them and all you can ever talk about is YA which, with most cliches these entail and lines YA doesn't cross ( in most cases at least) is going to be kind of frustrating after a while.

That said to all those here who are all like, ooh but ADULT fiction is pretentious and boring, you know that the whole scifi and fantasy genre is mostly NOT young adult? You're dismissing Terry Pratchett, Jim Butcher, Tolkien, George R R Martin and a whole slew of popular authors here. Sure you don't have to like most of what they write but fantastic, romantic, witty, silly or engaging stories are not restricted to the YA section. This goes for all the bad stuff as well.

And dismissing 'classics' because they are 'stuffy' is treating a whole varied section of books, written across all genres, styles and centuries unfairly. Sure maybe you didn't like what you've read so far and you have no obligation to look further but gross generalization makes you look nearsighted at best.

(I'm really sorry you lost one of your best friends. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose my close friends. I really wish the best for you, anon.)

Some time last year my ten year old sister wanted pet chickens after seeing them at a family friend's farm. My parents finally gave in, and my sister's been taking care of a few. A couple months ago she got a new baby chick, and this one is really close to her. It follows her around, and when the sun sets it sits by the back door, waiting for her to bring it in so she can put it in its cage in the garage.
We live pretty much in the middle of nowhere in these newer subdivisions that became big during the housing boom in the mid 2000's. So it was nothing new when we began noticing this eagle flying around our neighborhood, or see coyotes from time to time. Yesterday my mom came in from tending to her vegetable garden in our backyard and said she thinks our chickens are missing (we have three). My brother was theorizing that the eagle has taken them.
Well, my sister's favorite chick never came by the door, and my brother told me that when he went out he saw our brown chick hiding in my mom's garden.
Before noon today, I looked out and saw the eagle in our backyard, eating something. I wasn't sure if it found another chicken or if it was eating something my mom threw out to feed the chicken. I told my brother and mom, who were in the kitchen with me, and the whole family came out to look. My older brother and dad went out to look at the eagle and my dad threw rocks at it. It flew off, grabbing the thing it was feasting on, and I saw a chicken's foot dangling. Confirmation that it killed our baby chick. My mom and sister gathered our two remaining chickens and put them in the garage.
Later on, I saw the eagle return, perched on our peach tree. It flew off, but I get the feeling it may return. My mom says we might as well kill and eat our two remaining chickens. So I'm pretty sure we're not going to raise any more chickens. I don't want the eagle to come back and depend on our family to find its food. But it was pretty cool to see the eagle chilling in our backyard.

yeah that is a very valid point. I need to tell that to myself when I'm watching my cursor blink and bitching internally about SMeyer.

Even there though, some of the things she said in the interview with The Scotsman where she expanded upon her thoughts about Dumbledore's sexuality were unhelpful.

Idk. On one hand Dumbledore being gay and the furore about it was something If there's one kid out there who has an easier time dealing with things because they heard that, then that's a win. But it's a good that comes wrapped in a whole pile of crap. If it were actually canon a lot of that crap wouldn't matter as much.

(There's also the interview where she's asked if Charlie Weasley is gay, to which she responds "Dumbledore is gay." Which smacks rather of tokenism, doesn't it?)

I'm sorry anon.

I don't have any stories, but if you need a distraction I'd suggest playing a game, watching someone else play a game (those can be entertaining if you're interested, and take up a good bit of time too, so you'd be able to come back to it when you felt like it), getting lost on youtube (it's pretty easy to do, imo), or maybe tumblr (with a tag that tends to be mind-numbing, but still catches your interest; nails do it for me). Sorry I can't be of more help.

I'll second the tv tropes suggestion though!

Why does stunt!Thor have a mini-lightsaber. Why don't I have a mini-lightsaber that I can pretend is my penis?

Seriously though, what does he have in his hand?
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (omg u dun say)

The eyes are kinda watery-looking so maybe—

Wait. Disgusted?

Oh no does it really look like it's disgusted? Have I been accidentally bee looking down it's snout at everyone all this time? D8

ooh but ADULT fiction is pretentious and boring

Really, I suspect that, coming from people who read nothing but YA and fanfic, "pretentious and boring" actually means "difficult."

NGL, my first thought upon seeing it was, "I wonder if someone will write porn?" Then I realized that's probably skeevy as fuck, but hot damn...

Your urges are perfectly natural bb.

No place in the world deserves the experiences more than any other, but yeah, it sucks that it's becoming very concentrated in the US.

It's because many, many people on the internet are socially inept and/or afraid of transitioning into adulthood, so they try very, very hard to keep themselves feeling "young" by reading YA fiction. It's escapist, which means they don't have to think about how they're unemployed (or wish they had a better job), not in a relationship (or in a lousy one), not feeling "grown up," still living at home with Mom & Dad due to the crappy economy and therefore still feeling very young, etc.

I know I'm going to get called a troll and someone will inevitably comment, "well I'm 45 with a Ph.D and two awesome children and a great husband and I love YA blah blah blah" - but it's true for 95% of YA readers over age 21. Books, movies, fandom in general, all of it is escapist, and what you want to escape to says a lot about how you see yourself and/or what you wish your position in life was.

I really mean nobody any disrespect. If this hits home a bit too hard, I'm sorry, and I hope you figure things out.

lol, I thought it looked like a mini-lightsaber as well, but I'm thinking it's actually a walkie-talkie with tape around the antenna. Could be wrong though!

lolol my little Static Shock fangirl heart was so happy when Dwayne McDuffie said he intended for Richie to be gay (like one of the characters he was based on was) but was unable to actually have him be gay in the show so he could only put in little hints. OH, THE MILEAGE I GOT FROM THAT

[lots of moaning]

"Are you okay?"

"Yes. Damn it! I'm playing the wanton slut. Stop breaking character and play along."

[later]

"What's wrong with your dick? Get it hard!"

"I masturbated earlier."

"Goddamn it."

[note: my SO is really into Loki.]

"Well. Pretend I'm someone. Loki. Punish me! I've been a bad boy. I destroyed New York."

[laughing]

"Shut up!"

I don't know AtLA, but maybe people are actually complaining about legitimate stuff? If it's character bashing or wank, though, I understand your frustration.
