Seriously.

If you are trying to construct music... sometimes you want a guy singing it. More variety = more creativity.

And on the other end... some people just want to look at dudes and not girls.

Obviously that's sexist and there's the subtext that by wanting to look at guys you want to exclude all women. /the internet.

It's... almost like the OP forgets what Vocaloids are and are used for...

...Or they just think that fans should just use female voices for male voices because no one should ever want a male voice for their song? And you sure as hell better not want two males singing at the same time!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You must be new in the moe shit fandom.

Gonna assume you're talking about the fanwork/consuming-media fandom, and not the fandom that creates the music and just wants more voices to work with.

But anyways, your average jfen source material can be pretty good at passing the bechdel(sp?) test. This isn't as rare as you say it is. As long as you don't find the infantilization or ott fanservice those characters get as a negative (i'm thinking of all the moe uguu and harem trends that come and go because they basically all involve pandering rather than anything to do with equal opportunity air time).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
And here I thought Vocaloid was one of the few big fandoms that was mostly free of SJW types. So much for that.

I think that's true of many fandoms where the females outnumber the males, since sooner or later you get someone going "But what about the poor menz?" at which point my eyes always start rolling. Because men are so underrepresented in fiction.

Vocaloid isn't a work of fiction, though, it's a synthesized singing program.

But...vocaloids are music programs. And males are underepresented in vocaloid. Because japanese vocaloids, which are the most popular ones, are primarily marketed to spergy male otakus desperate for anime waifus.

To be fair, certain types of female voices are underrepresented as well, but overall you've got way more variety to choose from if you want your composition to have a female "singer" than if you want it to have a male one.

[personal profile] serenitysquid 2012-09-16 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, OK. If you're referring to the ones who want more guys for shallow reasons, I can kind of understand that. But they're vastly outnumbered by the people who just want more voices to mess around with, and I fail to see how that's a bad thing.

Having said that, it does bother me when someone says that they want more male Vocaloids because all the ones we have now sound the same. Seriously? They all sound the same? Yes, that's right, Len sounds EXACTLY like Big Al; I can never tell the difference between them! /sarcasm

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand complaining that, say, Len and Oliver sound similar, but Big Al is awesome and doesn't sound anything close to any other Vocaloid and really needs more love because his voice bank sounds good and pairs so well with so many others (especially Luka, I love duets that use them).

But yeah, I think most people who want more male vocaloids want them because they want more variety to play around with. An orchestra's not as fun when you've only got 3 instruments to work with, y'know?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
See, most of the guys sound different to me, so this is stupid.

And I guess what bothers me is the complaint of more males specifically. Not just ~*more voice types*~

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yawn. Get over it. And if you can't, take your precious wittle SJW ass and skedaddle, plzkthx.

As someone who doesn't participate in the fandom but has used VOCALOID to make music (mostly just vocal effects), the lack of guys annoys me, simply because my own voice is female. If I'm using a singing robot I want it to sound totally unlike me, otherwise I'd just sing it myself. That said, I love Prima a LOT and I also love Miku just because she has a wonderful penetrating quality to her voice that's incredibly useable.

Big ups to Tonio, Gakupo and Big Al.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

[personal profile] terabient 2012-09-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't usually call troll, but...

Even there were suddenly more male vocaloids than female ones, the fandom would still be female-dominated because the female vocaloids are the most popular. (that's why so many of them are released, obv.) Releasing more male voices would not stop people from making female vocaloid songs and videos--lbr, it's way more likely that new male vocaloids would be mostly ignored, just like the existing ones.

Because adding male characters retroactively destroys the existence of female ones.

Hurrdurr variety is bad.

Oh, shut up.

Some of us also want people to learn how to properly use the voices we already have too, but liking Kaito and thinking people need to learn how to use him doesn't mean we hate Miku (or whoever your favourite female Vocaloid is) and people don't just like Lily for her appearance either.

you do realize that the (probable) reason for why there's more female vocaloids is so that otaku have 2D dreamgirls to drool over, right? I mean, if you're looking for female empowerment, or something...Vocaloid probably isn't the fandom to go to for it.

this is late, yes. but people like OP make me very angry.

sorry but are you even IN the fandom? You know that vocaloids being female doesn't make this some sparkly amazing female-friendly show thing right? vocaloids are MUSIC SOFTWARE. if you were actually in the fucking fandom, you'd have noticed how many generic moe, teen girl voicebanks we have now. We're into V3 already and we only have 2 original male voicebanks (gakupoid is an upgrade from v2), and about 20 or so female already.

shut the fuck up and stay out of my fandom.
