I wish there was more Mad Men fanfic too!

Probably because it's a more somber, straight forward, almost non-genre show. (It's a period piece but it's more of a contemporary period piece.) Those shows really don't get many fics because they don't attract the type of fans who would do fics in the first place. You want fics and such, go to fantasy/sci-fi shows. That's where the writers are.

You're right, but I'd also say that I would find very difficult to write about Mad Men. I don't think I can write anything as good as the show itself so, what's the point?
mekkio: (Default)

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-09-16 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That and because it's a relatively modern period piece, it's harder to write because there are still people alive from that area and people are more familiar than say the Middle Ages, where you can make up more because people kept less records. Fanfic becomes, research and then write fanfic, which people like less.

it's harder to write because there are still people alive from that area (era?)

Why would that make it harder to write about? People write fanfic about shows set in the present all the time

And I'd think it'd be easier to research the 1960s than medieval times. If anything you could probe your living relatives for material

Era...man, I need to check my spelling.

Oh, it would be easier to research because there is so much of 1960s stuff. And that's what makes it a pain. For a good fanfic for the show, people are going to want the details and probably already know most of the details of that era, so you would have to do MORE research than say, setting your fic in 13th century England, which most people only have a general knowledge of so you can use a general outline.

Or to put it another way, this is more likely a complaint you are going to get when writing a fic about the Mad Men era, "Dude, they didn't have those brand of cigarettes yet in 1960" and this is a less likely complaint you are going to get when writing a story set in 13th century English, "Dude, her dress description is all wrong. The sleeves weren't shaped that way and the hemline is too long."

Hm, well maybe it's just because I majored in history (with an emphasis on European history), but I would find it just as irritating to find anachronisms in a fic set in 13th century England as I would in a fic set in 1960s USA

I think people watch Mad Men with that same kind of attitude, though. "PFFT those typewriters weren't around in 1966!"

The writers and the actors of Mad Men have said that people have complained on those very minor details.

Because the type of people who watch this show are generally not the type who write fanfic. And thank God for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't write fic because infidelity is a huge personailty squick for me, and I refuse to like characters who engage in it. If I don't like the characters, I don't want them to have happy endings, and that's pretty much what I write.

[personal profile] 30_rock_office 2012-09-16 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
For a while we were going strong. I even contributed to the fandom. But as soon as the 17 month hiatus hit, everyone stopped writing. I guess they just kind of lost steam. I miss it though because for a while there, it really looked like the fandom was going to finally burst forth.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Mad Men had a 17-month hiatus?! And I thought the ten-month hiatus halving one season of Breaking Bad was ridiculous.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-09-17 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was going to be cancelled and all sorts of other stuff was going on, they had a huge fight to get it back on the air.

SO glad it's back!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
There's some on AO3, but Mad Men is really hard to write about. The characters and scenarios are so nuanced that playing around with them in fanfiction feels like disarming a bomb. You're gonna fuck something up, it's gonna get OOC, and then no one will want to read it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I find intimidation is part of the reason, yeah. The other is that a lot of people are quite satisfied with how canon was written that rarely anyone needs more that one they got after watching the show.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Because a lot of the characters are boring and the rest are cheating assholes :(

Obligatory "so go write your own" comment!

I know nothing about this fandom or show. Just mildly surprised nobody's said that yet

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Because its a horrible unpleasant to watch show?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, did the big bad show hurt you? You poor thing.

Mad Men fic would be awesome, but to be honest...i can't think of single fic scenario right now. The show is so good, and there's not a lot left out that i want to see more of, or 'fix'....

Just maybe Don bending Peter over his desk as a 'punishment' for being a dickhead....

[personal profile] yeahscience 2012-09-17 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly can't imagine what I would write about in a Mad Men fic. The show is so subtle, it doesn't really lend itself to the kind of Major Plot Arc that fanfic demands.

Mad Men is a show I love discussing and analyzing the hell out of, but it does not spur my urge for fanfic at all. I can even think of all kinds of things one could explore in a fic (e.g. where you think an adult Sally will turn out or an elderly Don or Betty or Peggy looking back on their lives or maybe scenes from adult characters' childhoods or some of Beth's past...uh...liaisons and depressive cycles). But even without touching on the details of those things, the show still feels so complete.

It's like a really gorgeous, intricately decorated cake: you are supposed to start slicing it up and eating it, but you'd kind of rather just admire it rather than poking at it. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect it's because the canon is completely satisfying as it is.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
It could be because the show sucks and it's boring. The characters are bland and the storyline is run of the mill. The phoned in acting could be a factor too, but I doubt people paid that much attention after the first few episodes.
