Can I rec the Darkness Rising trilogy? The main protag is Native American. There is romance in the story, but it's very minor.

I'm angry that someone made a YA fantasy series called the Darkness Rising trilogy, given the existence of the Dark Is Rising sequence.

Also, everyone should read The Dark Is Rising series, because it's a legitimate classic of YA fantasy and it... well, I guess the most significant main character is a boy who has wild adventures. but it does have at least one really good female character. and Bran! Bran is awesome. and anyway it's a really good series.

Darkness Rising came from the YA series titles having the word "dark" in them (The last one was called the "Darkest Powers trilogy") and rising came from the project name of the experiments "Project Phoenix" Trust me, she didn't rip anyone off :P

A million times seconded!

Well, not the anger part, but The Dark is Rising Sequence is a wonderful rec for OP. Maybe not from the 'all the characters are white' standpoint, but cliche romance doesn't play much of a part at all, and it's such an intriguing tale. Bran is STILL one of my favorite characters of all time and I've actually told many people that the Sequence has shaped my life. :)

Seriously? I'd be surprised if there's only two. 'Dark rising' is a pretty generic concept.

(Question: Does the title of The Dark Knight Rises also bother you?)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm not really angry

and no, because "Dark Knight Rises" is much less close to "Dark Is Rising" than "Darkness Rising", and also because it's clearly a reference to the established nickname of Batman, and also because it's a movie and not YA fantasy

but really "angry" was an exaggeration for humorous effect and i should have realized that might not come across on the internet

Sorry! It can be hard to tell genuine outrage from mild facetiousness sometimes, and I have been known to err on the side of snarking at people. >__>

I will always second a comment that is recommending that people read The Dark is Rising.

Does it also make you angry that there's a character named Bran in 'A Song of Ice and Fire'?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
furious >:(

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
but then we won't have 'raisin bran' jokes :(
