Sex toys for beginners?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Masturbation isn't what it used to be, so I thought I'd give some kind of toy a try. To everyone who uses toys, what would be a good choice?

I get off by rubbing my clit, inserting a finger doesn't do anything for me when I do it myself. My ex brought me off using his fingers or tongue, though. We didn't get as far as PiV before we broke up.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't used toys in a while but my first one was one of those little clit-only vibrators. I think the one I had was called a beaver (hrrr...) and it was actually shaped like a beaver. It was pretty cheap and I got it online. It worked pretty well and was how I taught myself to orgasm in the first place. It died because my cat chewed through the cord. (That's not really relevant but it makes me laugh every time I think about it.)

Something like this might work for you: http://www.amazon.com/DST-Brands-Pocket-Massager-Heads/dp/B005J0HB0S/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1348012717&sr=8-4&keywords=vibrator

Waterproof dancing dolphin vibrator (http://www.theadulttoyshoppe.com/discreet-sex-toys/clitoral-stimulators/waterproof-dolphin-vibrator.html)

I can only get off rubbing my clit as well and this has never failed me. And it's cheap as far as vibes go. (Usually around 12 bucks.) Fair warning, it's strong. Very strong. But if this doesn't get you off, nothing will.

Something you might try would be a (modest-sized) dildo-shaped vibrator.

If you are thinking about trying PiV at some point, experimenting with penetration on your own will probably be helpful since you can find out what it feels like and figure out what you like without any worries about performance anxiety or whether you're paying enough attention to your partner while trying to simultaneously process new sensations. Personally, I didn't think I liked PiV all that much until I got around to experimenting with a dildo on my own and now I love it! (Your results may vary, but don't give up until you've given it a chance.)

If it turns out you don't like penetration with the toy all that much, then hey, you've still got a perfectly good vibrator!

Tip 1: Look for something that does not contain BPA or other potentially dangerous materials. 100% medical grade silicone is a good option, for example.

Tip 2: Something waterproof that you can use in the shower is nice. If you feel you need to hide the noise of the vibrator, the running water is good for that.

Tip 3: Use lubricant, especially with penetration. Make sure the lubricant is appropriate for the materials of the toy you buy. I think water-based gel or liquid should be fine for most things, and you can pick up a store-brand tube of the stuff for cheap down at the drug store.

if you have access to a sex shop, online on in person, I really suggest starting with a small vibrator. something like the bullet style. Just play around with it a bunch.

If you want something for penetration, go for a vibrating dildo. don't get anything too big in girth, especially if you've never had piv-sex. could really hurt. maybe something like the rabbit? look at reviews online, see what fits your current needs.

basically anything that vibrates is a good idea because you can use it on your clit and g-spot (if it reaches). both feel amazing. maybe start with cheaper products and work your way up as you discover what you prefer, because everyone likes different things and spending $100+ on something someone else suggests and then finding out you don't like it? not cool.

Seconding a bullet/egg shaped toy. Great for clitoral, but also insertable. I like BNaughty's stuff, you can usually find them for $25-50. I've never used a cordless bullet, but it's probably nice too.
