I like them because they're easier to search on tumblr or any place you can't use a slash. Also sometimes it makes it harder to search pairings when people put different names first. But having a well known portmanteau makes it easier.

Not so fond of when they'll only use the first letter of one person's name, what if there are other people in the show with a name that starts with the same letter?

Very much agreed with this. Even with search engines, they frequently don't differentiate between 'X/Y' being typed out and Y following X in a sentence. Having a unique keyword associated with the pairing makes life much easier.
