I don't know why some people insist on having them for every single pairing, to the point that they ask around about what the "official" portmanteau is when they first get into a ship. It may seem here like no one likes them, but they're all over Tumblr.

I am so confused by them! I'e always been bad at word puzzles and I have to say them three or four times before they make any sense to me. Written down they make even less sense. I feel like an idiot whenever I'm in a new fandom because I have no idea what's going on.

the YGO fandom would be better off if they used these tbh

instead they have random-word-that-has-little-to-do-with-the-pairing!shipping for everything. everything.

To be honest I don't like them but I don't act derisive toward people who use them. I enjoy the silly Pokemon "ship names" and that's no better, in fact probably even worse.
kyuusei: This is Iggy being adorable. Not that it's difficult. (Default)

I think they can be cute.

Makes it easier to tag pairing-specific stuff on Tumblr. Not that I care about more than one single pairing..

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a secret I could have made. I think they're fun, although a few of them make me cringe a bit I have to admit. But I've never quite understood why they're hated so much.

I like some, some set my teeth on edge, and others make absolutely no sense.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like how the Avengers fandom works it, most of the more popular ships have both a portmanteau name and a "proper" name that describes the characters. (Thor/Loki is either Thorki or ThunderFrost, Natasha/Clint is either Clintasha or BlackHawk, Steve/Tony is Stony or SuperHusbands, etc)

I only like them if they're either really dirty (peenis) or funny (spork).

Anyone got some funny/dirty ones?

Idk some portmanteau names I like(Sassy from Spn for example) but a lot of them make me cringe, I suppose I like the silly nicknames better but honestly I prefer using name/name for my ships. I don't judge anyone that does like or use them though.

Depends on the names being smushed for me. ATLA for all its drama has some pretty memorable ship names (Zutara, Kataang, Makorra, etc), simply because its characters have memorable name.

I remembered the Gossip Girl fandom had/has Chair. And other fandoms have similar "common object as ship name" pairings. Which I don't like as much compared to a simple / or x between the names.

I like them because they're easier to search on tumblr or any place you can't use a slash. Also sometimes it makes it harder to search pairings when people put different names first. But having a well known portmanteau makes it easier.

Not so fond of when they'll only use the first letter of one person's name, what if there are other people in the show with a name that starts with the same letter?

I'm okay with some of them, but a lot just sound weird and awkward. I don't use them (or the pairing names) myself.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I had a bit of a hard accepting them for a long time, mostly because when I first joined fandom the trend was to call ships A+B (first initials only) or A/B. I thought it sounded cute.

(Damn, saying it like that makes me feel old)

But nowadays, specially since I got into my new OTP... well, crap, I like it now.
streetcake: (Default)

[personal profile] streetcake 2012-09-19 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I like them because they're easier to say and type than character A/character B.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I hate portmanteau ship names with a horrible fiery passion.

But I do not hate them as much as portmanteau crossover descriptions. Just. Don't do that. Don't.

I don't hate them! They're especially convenient when you have a crappy phone that doesn't type so well. But I also don't mind calling them namesmushes. :|a

Truthfully depends on the fandom for me. Some Sherlock fandom pormanteaus (Johnlock, Mystrade, and Mormor) set my teeth on edge. I think they're too cutesy for the people they're representing! Moriarty and Moran are serial killers and Mormor means GRANDMOTHER in some languages ffs. I also associate it with some of the loudest and most obnoxious fans on both tumblr and the kinkmeme, so just. . .no. I don't mind some of the rarepair ones though, like Molliarty, and I quite like the sound of Jimlock for some reason, but then Jimlock is my favorite UST pairing.

Other fandoms are fair game, though. I love what the Avengers fans have done with their couple nicknames, I think they're fucking adorable. And I just got into Community and I love everything about Trobed, even their namesmush <3

I have no extreme feelings for them - neither love nor hate. Some sound funny, some sound silly, some I feel comfortable using, some make me frown.

Portmanteau *makes note* Thank you for teaching me a new word!

(I don't like them much. They make it even more difficult to recognize what fandom people are talking about...)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
I like the simplicity of Name A/Name B in alphabetical order. It's the easiest convention to follow. I started in old Trek fandom and K/S, P/C, R/T are so familiar to me. Nameamushes in old fandoms, like the X-Files, Mully? Mulchek? Sculner? Just sound silly. I suppose Kock is funny for K/S, but Picrusher (which I've seen on tumblr) just sounds ridiculous. Troker? Rioi? Janetay? Chakway? (Janeway/Chakotay) Janeven? Seway? (Janeway/Seven).

I get frustrated by het ships that always put the male name first, even when it's contrary to alphabetical order. That feels misogynistic to me. Why Picrusher and not Crucard, TNG fandom on tumblr?

Mostly they just confuse me. I can search for Name A/Name B much faster than I can search out all the variations which they can be portmanteaued.
