Just lending an ear to a person can be a lot of help, and encouraging them to get professional help is good too. Maybe you could do research on mental disorders and read accounts by other people? There's a lot of good memoirs/general books that can explain to you what mental illness is like.

Don't wish mental illness on yourself, though. It's a miserable thing to deal with, and you're never clear of worrying about relapse, and it can fuck up your whole life. Be empathetic, but also be grateful that you don't have to deal with it.
