Aw, too bad.

I have to say, I've never gotten people thinking they aren't compatible with someone because they like or dislike a show/movie/book, though? Is it only a deal breaker if they actively hate it, or would it also bother you if they had never watched it (I've never watched Fifrely myself, so maybe it's reallly great and I just don't know...)?

But, with the differences about premarital sex and him wanting to marry soon, I guess it's for the best.

I'm always excited to meet someone who has not seen Firefly. That's why I have an extra box set! I normally don't really care if someone has a different taste than me in something but Firefly is pretty special and he actively dislikes it but enjoys other sci-fi.

I personally know two people who hate sci-fi that bought their own dvd sets when I introduced them to Firefly.

I don't know, there are some things I think I'd feel pretty strongly about. I mean, I'd want to be with someone who I at least believed had basic good taste in things, so if someone was like, "Oh, I tried watching Breaking Bad and it just wasn't as good as Glee, I don't know why it wins any awards"... we probably would not be dating.

Personally, I don't mind if someone just does/doesn't like something (even if I'm sometimes like, WHY), but I think it's when they start making statements like "it's a ripoff Star Wars" that are blatantly false that I am like, nope.gif.

Yeah, there are some things that can give you a pretty good indication of someone's personality and how you'd get along. Especially if the reason they give boils down to *unintelligible*. For me, Firefly is one of them.

And being completely honest fandom is a huge part of my life and pretty much all of my references. I have no idea what I'd talk to a SO about if we didn't share at least some basic tastes.

For me, it kind of depends. I don't care if my friends and dates like all the same stuff I do, so just them not liking a fandom of mine wouldn't be a deal breaker (or even a turn-off, necessarily).

But it could be a problem depending on how they expressed their dislike. Like, if they were really snarky or rude, or if they implied that I had bad taste for liking something. If someone seemed really eager to put down something I enjoyed, that'd be a turn-off. Also, if they were really negative about it then, I'd worry it'd be a conflict down the line. I don't want to be with someone who complains who makes fun of me or complains whenever I want to watch a DVD of my favorite show.

A while back, I read this letter to Dear Prudence on Slate where this guy was complaining because his new wife was into cartoons (anime, maybe? Can't remember if it specified), and he thought it was ridiculous that she enjoyed them and liked watching the DVDs.

At the very least, I want my partner to refrain from harshing my squee.
