People absolutely throw the accusation 'like siblings' toward ships just to hate on them. I know it's super common in my main fandom, but in pretty much every fandom I've been in before this, I've seen people pull it.

My favorite was back in the FMA fandom, I saw multiple Elricest shippers going on about how EdWinry was gross because they were like siblings. Um.

(There are also a fair amount of fans who kind of tout themselves superior for not shipping. Oh I only like bromances and family relationships. None of those silly romantic entanglements.)

oh mannn the fans that think they're the shit because they are so ABOVE shipping drive me nuts. i'm all cool about letting people ship or not ship what they want but as soon as you feel like your preferences somehow make you a better person? kindly gtfo.

I know. It's okay if you just like bromances, friendships, familial relationships, etc.? But you're not any better for 'squeeing' over those kinds of relationships than people are for squeeing on romantic ones.

I especially love it when they talk about how much better gen fic is than ship fic because ship fic is nothing but stupid romance cliches whereas people put actual thought into gen fic.

I always find that amusing, because for many fandoms I've been in, I've found the gen fic more cliché and bland than the shippy stuff (though obviously there is some great gen out there as well).

man i only consider characters 'like siblings' when they are actually raised together in one home/under same guardians or something similar, or when a slightly older/wiser/whatever person takes care of and protects someone younger. growing up together and being childhood friends =/= being 'like siblings'. the worst part is that people only usually apply the 'like siblings' shit to a boy/girl relationship. because boys and girls can't be childhood friends without some kind of power dynamic amirite.

Elricest shippers going on about EdWin being gross because it's like... incest? Oh god, the lack of sense, it burns.

I mean, I don't find EdWin gross, but I really feel like their personalities are far more inclined to sibling relationship than anything romantic, and that they were just forced together by the expectations around them. I mean, did Winry even HAVE any male friends her own age outside of the Elrics? There was absolutely no uncertainty that she would get together with one of them. Ah well, it's no slight against me that people ship that (which some people seem to take the canon personally, but wtfever).

But then again, the EdWin shippers like to call me a pedophile for shipping (adult) Ed and Roy together, so I have no patience for that either.

In conclusion, the majority of the FMA shipping fandom needs to go suck on a cactus and leave everyone well enough alone. /bitter

Hahah yeah.

Risenpool is a village though. In the manga we see them go to school, and there are definitely other kids there, so I'm sure Winry had other friends. As for uncertainty, it's generally pretty obvious from close to the beginning if a pairing is going to be canon in my experience, but as long as it's well written, I don't mind. I'd actually rather that than SURPRISE pairing. *laugh*

Ed's best friend as a child (per the sanctioned novels) was a kid named Pitt, who had a crush on Winry.

So, yeah, the trio at least knew other kids. However, they weren't important to the actual story in the manga.
