Agreed on the "not liking Firefly = deal breaker" thing. And, for all the people wondering, it's not because they don't like a thing that I like. It's because, generally speaking, you can tell a lot about someone by the reason they don't like it.

Firefly is not a perfect show; cowboys in space might not be your thing. But if I meet someone who doesn't like it solely because one of the main characters is a prostitute...well, I see no reason to befriend them. ;D

(That happens with alarming frequency.)

I wouldn't have a problem with it if the genre wasn't someone's cup of tea. I'd be a little bewildered maybe but for a sci-fi geek to actively hate it?

I don't like Firefly very much

although I think it's more a product of general mixed feelings about Joss Whedon's writing style/dialogue, and probably the fact that it didn't get enough time to reach its full potential. but it's definitely not something i love.

I've been a sci-fi nut since I was 13 and I just turned 40. I don't like Firefly. I actively dislike Star Wars. Think what you want, but I've liked sci-fi longer than some of you commenters have existed. And I think it's fucking hilarious you think we have to meet some watershed of geekdom to have sci-fi cred. *snort*

I'm a major SF geek, and I'm ambivalent on Firefly. It's not that I dislike it, but... I think that by the time I watched it, it had been SO hyped by virtually all the people I knew that I was expecting a lot more. I thought it was a lot of fun but it didn't affect me in the same way that, say, Angel did. I think I might have felt different if it had actually gone on longer, though, because by the time it ended it was just ramping up to the point of really being something to stick in my mind.

Um, ok? Ambivalent=/=Hate.

I mostly feel this way because fandom is an important part of my life and I have no idea how I would relate to a SO if we had such drastically different tastes in sci-fi. The guy in question had some pretty ridiculous things to say about Firefly that didn't really bode well for his other fannish interests.

I'm not saying anywhere all sci-fi geeks have to worship at the altar of Firefly or something. Just that I don't think I would have enough in common to date someone who outright hated Firefly.
