(Whatup, favourite-movie-ever-when-I-was-a-kid!)

I did find it kind of ironic, though, that Harriet considered it no big deal to invade the privacy of the people on her spy route (watching them unawares, even sneaking into a private home). But when the tables were turned and it was her privacy that was invaded (her classmates reading her private notebook), she couldn't handle it at all and seemed (if we judge from her vengefulness afterward) to feel it was horribly unfair.

I agree that there's nothing wrong with writing down private thoughts about your friends, though, even ones that aren't necessarily nice. I didn't consider until now that the narrative may have been trying to "punish" her for that, and god, I hope that wasn't the authors' intent. Ick.

It's because her actions weren't meant to be hurtful, but the reading of her private notebook was done SPECIFICALLY to be hurtful.

:-/ I still take issue with spying on people in their homes. Granted, the notebook was explicitly labeled "private," but I feel like American culture has a pretty clearly implied (not to mention legally marked) boundary surrounding a person's home, and I think people have a right to expect that that will be known and respected. I know that if I found some random person lurking in my dumbwaiter and writing down everything I said, I'd feel pretty violated. I can handwave it to some extent because she's very young and (when the story begins) probably hasn't had her privacy violated in a serious way, so she likely doesn't know how upsetting it could be to someone to discover her spying on them; but I don't think I can agree that she's done "nothing wrong." If she were my child I'd definitely want to have a talk with her about it.

I don't know. I actually see a huge difference between observation of people and people reading private books. She never, if I recall, went through peoples' stuff or whatever just observed them in the open (and yeah, she snuck around some to do it). I would have no problem if people went and did the same to her - following her around and writing down what she did. But going to a private journal and reading it and making it public...yeah, way crossing a line in my opinion.

just observed them in the open

Except for Harrison Withers, and Mrs. Plummer and her maid, and Hong Fat's family and George Waldenstein. Harrison and Mrs. Plummer were in their houses. The Hong Fat crew and Mr. Waldenstein were in the back room of the store. These are all very definitely private spaces, by law and by custom. I know I'd be pretty freaked out if I found out that someone was watching me in my house, and that goes for most people I know.

Like I said in my other reply, I know Harriet's actions weren't malicious -- she's clueless and young, not evil. But I don't think I can quite accept that there was nothing at all wrong with what she got up to.
