I thought it was the consensus among non-Burton fanatics that most stage productions are head and shoulders above the film. I saw the John Doyle production in London (the minimalist set, the actors also playing the orchestral score) and I was so incredibly entranced and terrified. YMMV certainly on which production you see, but I thought everyone agreed that they're all better than the film.

I saw the Doyle production on tour. While it wasn't as fulfilling for me as the original stage production, I did appreciate it because I do love minimalist productions (and yes, it was still just as terrifying). I think that style, though, worked better in his production of Company, as that tends to lend itself better to minimalism.

The thing that really won me over to Doyle was the concept of having the cast do double-duty as the orchestra. You've got to have some pipes on you already to be in a Sondheim play, but to also play an instrument at a performance level means the production's got to have amazing talent. Seeing Sweeney Todd was the reason I went to see Company, and it's easily become one of my favorite plays of all time.

Oh, absolutely! The actors really proved themselves in that by not only singing a difficult score, but playing it as well (I'd probably breakdown if I had to do both - just singing Sondheim can be a task!)

I remember the Doyle cast of Company did a sort of tongue-in-cheek number for the BCEFA Easter Bonnet competition that year in which they sang about how, with Doyle, you had to be a quadruple threat now!

/Totally okay with OT gushing if it deals with Sondheim - I have so many feelings about him!

Just dropping by to say OH GOD YOUR ICON. Love it to pieces. :-)

Couldn't agree more. There were parts of the show that I loved, sure. The red lighting/whistle whenever somebody died was fantastic, and seeing Judy Kaye was amazing (She's pretty much the reason I love musicals), but it was just sort of...lifeless, I guess? While Company worked a lot better.

Though it doesn't mean I don't love the cast; it's just one of the few times when I think the album is better than the production.

I saw that one too! It was incredible! Johanna hiding behind the cello and playing it at the same time ... *shivers*

Went with my mom. We both loved it and were horrified at the same time. The movie was good ... ish ... but it was a different kind of good and can't really be judged in the same way as the show.
